Same exact person. He just raised his rank to King as he felt he was worthy of the title.
For the hip-hop heads, its kinda like when MF Grimm elevated himself to GM (grandmaster) Grimm.

Think it was after King Tubby died, no? He was a protege of Tubbys.

Nope, Tubby was alive and well still when Jammy was dubbed the King. King Tubby died in 1989 while Sleng Teng was released in 1985.

Anybody have the sleeve note or insert from the "Crowning of prince JAmmy" LP/CD? That pretty much tells the story and explains his name change. ADam

Hi,
Personally speaking after he produced his so called digital masterpiece in "Sleng Teng" and changed the course of Reggae, and not for the better, he should have lost his title completely.
The digital revolution killed the roots of reggae, it killed the artistry of dub and most of all made many a great musician obsolete.
Don`t get me wrong, Prince Jammy in his pre-digital days was excellent and almost up with King Tubby and Scientist. But to me the art of Reggae died in 1985 and Mr Jammy was responsible.
Respect
Dave

The introduction of digital really was a bad move. I can't take it at all. No feel whatsoever...
Never mind! we have all the pre-digital music to enjoy!!
