Rare Reggae CDs

Post by mick d »

For those CD collectors, what are the most prized reggae CDs out there?

For example, Pablo Moses "A Song" goes for over US$50 on Amazon. And Misty In Roots "Jah See Jah Knows" goes for over US$100. There's got to be more.

I always bought reggae because I love the music, but it turns out some of the CDs may be worth a nice chunk of change. I know vinyl fetches big prices, but I never thought CDs could be worth something.

Check out Misty in Roots "Wise and Foolish" on Amazon. It was up for £200 recently.

I cannot understand it really, its crazy money.

I can only assume that the rarity of some of the original albums is helping to push up prices on CD`s way beyond any true value or rarity.

But ... did they sell for those prices? I had a Misty In Roots compilation I sold to someone for £60. I can't imagine there being more than ... 10-15 reggae CD's fetching big dollars. Perhaps the Early B 4CD anthology or the withdrawn Makasound V/A CD. But what more?

Yes, I remember discussion a ways back about the Wanted V/A CD from Makasound:

[cover=3596,3794]

Man, I wish I hadn't passed up the chance to buy that for 5 bucks!

Good point about whether people are actually buying the CDs for the price they're listed as. Given that people are willing to pay thousands for vinyl, you gotta assume that people will shell out the money for these rare CDs.

It seems ridiculous to pay big money for rare reggae CDs. If you look around hard enough, you can usually find what you're looking for cheap somewhere through Amazon re-sellers, E-Bay, or www.gemm.com. Or, you can always arrange for a trade with someone for a CDR copy. I think Larks From The Ark (a Lee Perry collection on Nectar) would classify as a rare CD worth paying more money for, but as Rootsman says, the prices don't reflect the true value.

vinyl was once thought of as cheap junk too(not by all but heck of alot),perhaps once cd becomes outdated their value will go up??And now with digital to analog convertors that"warm fuzzy sound" isnt exclusive. I dont know of any rare cd myself right now ask in 10 years.

There is "19.95 + Tax" by the Abyssinians...
It has a slightly different tracklisting than the Reunion album.

Maybe the Little Roy : Columbus Ship CD is scarce too. It has a few bonus tracks, including dub versions : Pull Your Dub, Bus I Dub, Sambo Dub...

Classic Reggae (Mastercuts CUTSCD 30, 1995) is also an excellent now scarce compilation.

Scientist's Greensleeves albums are now going for silly money. I've seen some of them listed for £70+ on Amazon before.

No idea why. Sure, they're out of print at the moment - but they must've pressed tens of thousands. It's not as though they're really old, obscure CD releases...
