Studio 16 LP

Post by matt »

I have an LP in my collection named "Workers Speak to their Slave Masters with Strike" on the Studio 16 label.

I have searched around online for information on the LP as my label is a bit different than the other labels posted online. My label is printed all in red (it is like the label that is shown on Tapir's Reggae Discography under Studio 16 LPs). The examples I have seen online all have had black writing.

Can anyone provide any information on the possible pressing of my copy? Which one is the original? I have not seen any represses of this LP and I believe it is pretty rare.

Could you take a better photo or a scan of the label because checking from Tapir's it looks as the label has (P)(C) marked at the bottom. This would arguably make your press a later one.

It's a fantastic album. Would love to own it some day but checking the prices on eBay would make me believe I won't. :)

There are two pressings of the LP, the original and one which as far as I can remember was pressed in the late eighties.

The easiest way to tell the difference is the sleeves, the repress being very much of it's time, I may still have both issues, if so I'll let you know the differences between the labels.

I'm surprised it's going for much money, I had copies of the repress for years, they were a nightmare to sell.

Sorry I don't have a larger photo. Thanks for the info about the pressings. I figured there must have been two pressings. Do you know if it was a Winston Edward pressing? Do you know approximately how many were pressed up? I haven't seen many.

I've dug my copies out, it's easy to tell the two apart;

First Press:
Sleeve, orange/red, track listing on front, matte card.
Label standard seventies/eighties Studio 16 label "Studio" printed in black ink.

Second Press:
Sleeve more pinky/purple, track listing on rear, no border, sleeve has slight shine.
Label is only two colours, red on white, no black ink and slightly different layout.

The two pressings are totally different cuts, much larger run out on the repress, both appear to be put out by Winston Edwards.

i picked my copies of the reissue up in January 1993, but I have a feeling they were cheap as the distributor was clearing old stock so it probably dates from '89-'92.

Neither copy turns up very often I'd guss they pressed anywhere from 500 to 2,000 of each issue.
