burning spear re-re-reissue

Post by marcus »

Does anyone know if there's anything new about the latest Burning Spear MARCUS GARVEY/GARVEY'S GHOST Hip-O Select CD reissue, apart from the cover image? It's the "35th Anniversary [of the original album]" remastered bla-bla-bla, as opposed to the "100th Anniversary [of Marcus Garvey's birthdate]" that Island put out in 1987.

I have the two UK LPs (on Mango, I think) and the combined Island CD, but I've read that the original JA mix of MARCUS GARVEY was slower (and thus closer to the original vision of the set?). What about the dub? Was that ever released in a different JA mix? This is such a basic item in anyone's collection; please clarify the muddied waters!

Thank you.

The original JA release of 'Marcus Garvey' on Wolf and Total Sounds label was and is always worth looking for. It has a different mix.
The dub album 'Garvey's Ghost' on the other hand had been taken from the Island masters when released on the Fox label in JA. So, afaik, there exists no jamaican mix of the dub album.

Most probably, this new release is just a remaster of the 1987 CD.

I have a few Hip-o select CD`s, ie George Faith "To be A Lover" and Dillinger "Bionic Dread/CB200" twoofer, and they are worth picking up not only for the excellent sound quality but also for there highly informative liner notes.

This release may be worth picking up for that alone as, from what I have seen" all previous CD releases of "Marcus Garvey" have been void of the liner notes that this excellent set deserves.

I was quite dissapointed about the lack of sleeve notes on these CD's myself but i have noticed this with a lot of Island/Mango releases, i havent had a chance to see inside the re re release but i hope it does if so it may well be worth the investment as the CD's i have are all secondhand anyway and not in 100% condition.

Just wanted to mention that I picked up this Hip-O-Select reissue of Marcus Garvey / Garveys Ghost.

Like with the other reissues on this label it has been superbly remastered and has far better sound quality than the previous issues that I had heard.

It also has a booklet containing some excellent informative liner notes about Burning Spear and comes in a cardboard gatefold CD case and looks really good.

I would definately recommend this reissue as imo it is way superior to all previous CD issues.

If you want different dubs from the tracks on the "Marcus Garvey" LP, all the ones that were released as 7" on Fox have different dubs!
