Some RP's are almost as hard to get hold as the originals and fetch a fair whack too, take the Auralux Blackboard Jungle 14 Dub RP, not as authentic as the original but rare as and still a nice record in it's own right . . . . . I'm still looking for it anyway.
Also, a lot of these tunes should also be remastered to preserve what's left of them, 2" master tapes aren't everlasting, neither are the original pressings.

Re: repress haters
Just to collect originals for money reasons is not interesting at all. I also own quite some represses - but to be honest ... and it is hard to explain...the old original pressings have another vibe - at least for me. Pulling a 30+ years heavy vinyl out of a thick (in many cases imperfect )cover..to feel the textured and often multicolored labels makes the sound somehow different.
At first for me is the music - but if it comes from the real stuff it is even better. The value (and I mean not the financial one) of the music is simply higher for me when it comes from the initial Vinyl instead of a mp3 file.
I assume there are other people feeling like me.. see e.g. the great Jamaican Label Art website (filed under "links" on RA)

Book collectors say the same thing of their first pressings. For someone who buys old records (not represses or new music) there is an allure of fate when finding a killer track you've never heard before...and to have this happen every week is quite invigorating. I listen to about 30-40 records a night (be it 45's, or 12's) and putting something new in the rotation is a plus....although I happen to live in city where it's possible to to do so with a reasonable amount of funds.

Re: repress haters
Like Lee said, originals have the right vibe. The sound IS original and unique. It´s great fun hunting down a 20 years long searched copy. It´s not a money thing. It´s like an old wish came true. In Germany we have been thirsty for roots music quite a long time as reggae was ignored by the local music industry for too long.
The original vibes can´t be substituted by lousy mp3´s, no way. mp3 is no enjoyment, just consumption thing in a McDagobert style.
Represses have to be mastered well to sound acceptable. There is some good stuff, so why not? But a lot re´s sound awful. Just to make money.
So don´t judge collectors to be greedy
)
Btw,...I wouldn´t spend silly high prices on records....

Fair point, your book collector analogy is a good one. There is something nice about touching something with a lot of history behind it, it's as if you it takes you back to another age.jordandance wrote:Book collectors say the same thing of their first pressings. If I have the money I will buy it but in this hard times reissues are the way to go for many of us. If one loves the music, one will appreciate it any way it comes. I've met many collectors who are very selfish and in cases they don't even want to give the name of the song. On the other hand, there are those who are willing to give a hand like the man KALCIDIS who once helped me get an mp3 of a rare song i was searching for years!
Keep the reissues coming, for those who have the orIgInals you know they are still worth more than the reissues...

Vinyl is vinyl.
Personally, I like represses better because I don't have to worry about scratching or wearing out an expensive/rare o.g. tune!

some repressings or recent pressings become rare as well..Nandez wrote:Vinyl is vinyl.

King Melody - cool breeze LP from a few years ago for example does 50/60 quid now.
