Jackie Bernard "Torture & Flames"

Post by Rob Strictly-Rockers »

This is a great vocal cut by Jackie Bernard on the Picture On The Wall rhythm. Anyone know anything about this record?

I bid more than I've ever bid on ebay for a 7" single but I was outbid in the last few minutes and it went for £1411.00 !!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEDWX:IT

Was it ever pressed for general release or did it only come out on pre? Also who is paying this sort of money? Is it completist collectors or someone who wants to get the sound file and issue a vinyl pressing? Any information would be welcome.

Regards

Rob

I certainly hope the record was worth it. I'd expect it to cook, clean and cuddle me these cold winter nights for that kind of money...

But judging from the samples it's two bona fide songs!

My computer won't let me hear the sample for some reason, but "The Kingstonians-Lions Den" is available on CD on Trojan Suedehead Box Set

different cut...

and I personally think it's very average.. not anything special.. seen and heard much better tunes from the same era.

like this one for example:

Why do people feel they have to belittle anyone that outbids them as if their intentions were less pure than yours?

jordandance. Were you referring to my post? I assume you were because it is not clear that the other posters were involved in the bid.

Maybe you read it in a hurry because I challenge you to find anything belittling in what I said. Furthermore, you're not in a position to know what my intentions were for the record and from my post it is clear that I do not know what the purchaser's intentions are so I fail to understand the basis of your point.

I was only interested and had no intention of establishing a league table of purity of intentions.

i think it's a top collectors tune. jackie bernard is a cult reggae hero and this is one of (probably the) most coveted of his tunes. do i think this is a sane price? certainly not, but i've seen copies of this tune go for far less than this (though still always at "collectors prices".) it only fetched this amount because it's one of steve barrow's auctions (a strange phenomena, i don't understand why the "fame" of the seller matters, but whatever). i don't think it's jackie's best tune either, but just very scarce and still good early 70s studio one sound, to these ears. tune for tune, i think "jah jah way" from this same era is a better song, but certainly more easily found. hence the drama.

kofi, i agree there is better stuff out there, but maybe whoever bid on this already has everything he/she wants. or has more money than sense. :)

rob, to answer your question i'm pretty sure this is the only press of the tune (hence the scarcity). most of those Fab II releases from the UK are quite rare, and a few of the songs are only available from those 45s (the conquerors' "i hold the handle" is a long time want of mine, for instance).

hot milk,

Many thanks for your helpful answer. Picture on the Wall is one of my all time favourite rhythms and I like Jackie Bernard's cut. Hopefully I'll pick one up eventually.

now that i'm home i've consulted RKR and it says there was a JA press of this tune, on muzik city. not sure if this was a labeled pressing or just another pre, but wanted to post this info to correct what my misinformation from before. probably doesn't matter too much in terms of finding a copy of the tune, a rare one no matter how we cut it! i saw that a copy of cornell's "just can't find loving" on a fab II pre went for $500 a couple weeks ago, as another example (and if it had been one of barrow's auctions it would have doubled that, i'm sure). ;)
