Anyone know anything about The Lions?

Post by mn418 »

Just finally found a copy of the rare 70s roots killer by The Lions "Won't Pay"

Anyone know anything about this seldom heard roots group?

Thanks!

From the sample, sounds like a crucial tune. I'm always so intrigued by these long forgotten groups, great talents who have evaporated like smoke from a long-forgotten fire.

Mystic Eyes. The Dingles. The Skulls. Bright Wynter. Etc. If only there was a VH-1-type "where are they now" for roots artists. Unfortunately, as we all know the stories are often quite tragic, it takes a sufferer to make true sufferers music.

On that theme, I think I saw a thread on this, but does anyone have any idea what happened to Earth & Stone? Two incredibly talented singers, how and why did they just vanish into thin air? Apart from "Kool Roots", just a lethal set, "Sweet Africa" is one of my 10 or so favorite reggae songs ever (lethal Tommy McCook horn version on "blazing horns in dub", by the way - the Rhino set, not the Blood & Fire one).

Where are these bredren? "In Search of Earth & Stone" - it could make a great documentary.

it is a 7" uk release, i believe [from memory's sake] it's a shorter track from the JA press.

BTW both tunes are killers hands down !! i'm still looking for more music by them.
