Hi
I just got the McWoner Channel 1 10" from EB's & am disappointed to hear the dub version of Nuh Fire It is really crackley with several large clicks thru the whole version. Almost sounds as bad as my old 7" of this tune.
Has anybody else got this or is it just my copy?
The vinyl surface looks good (no obvious marks) On closer inspection there maybe some tiny pin-prick marks in the vinyl but it's hard to tell as they are small.
I have just listened to the sound sample up on Ernie B's site & you can hear the crackle there as well although my copy sounds worse than the EB sample.
RB any idea if it's the same on all copies or maybe just EB's batch?
many thanks

there is a degree of noise on the version, yes, though nothing i considered to be a deal breaker, but of course everyone's threshold for this is different. EB's samples always make everything sound overly harsh as they are recorded way too loud, and are low bitrate. if you're unhappy with it i suggest returning it to EB for another copy and see if you feel any different, or just asking for a refund. as i always say, if you feel you have an unsatisfactory product, you should deal with the retailer who sold you the item, and if that retailer will not refund or exchange, please contact us and let us know. thanks for the continued support JJ.

Got my copy last week. The 'Higher Region' side is pressed off-centered on my copy. The 'Nuh Fire It' side sounds good, apart from the clicks throughout the version.

Thanks for the reply RB, i've had a listen to some sound samples from UK stores & they have it too.I have emailed Ernies asking if all their copies are the same.
So was this recording taken from vinyl & not tapes?
I am curious to know why it wasn't posible to remove some of the worst 'clicks'.
For some of my scratchy-est records i use sound forge software to remove them & then burn the 'clean' version to disc.
It's takes a little while but is fairly easy - you just magnify each area of the track where there is a 'click' & delete it.
As long as you magnify the 'click' big enough you can actually be quite precise, removing the 'click' & little if any of the actual music.
Please don't take this as a negative comment as i am genuinely interested.
cheers

replied in depth on chattymouth. for the future i suggest contacting me privately for questions like this, i try to be as much of an open book as possible (after all there is nothing to hide), but really it is not necessary for me to publicly reply on more than one forum with regards to one person's questions about a record. thanks.

From Chattymouth
the tune is pressed from the original stampers which saw very little use back in the day (hence the original press being so rare). the tapes for these tunes do not exist, like many non-hit tunes they were likely wiped over/re-used a later date.
the noise you hear is inherent in the original press as well, likely due to a slightly less than perfect plating job. i chose to use the stampers despite the noise because i found the noise to be tolerable and ultimately unobtrusive (this is subjective of course), and b/c to me it's still preferable over the next option which would have been re-mastering from vinyl, which is not my first option when there is usable original source material (be it mastertape, mother or stamper).
in response to your comments on roots-archives, i assure you we are quite well versed in restoration technologies and our veteran Jamaican mastering engineer (of 30+ years experience and who has mastered countless classic records that we all own) actually specializes in this at this point in his career. whenever records are mastered from vinyl they are subject to careful restoration.
thanks for your interest and sorry if you are let down. i can only make my best effort and go with what i feel is acceptable, but unfortunately knowing that not everyone will feel the same. hope you continue to check for us sameway
