I remember that I heard reggae for the first time when I was 13/ 14. I started of buying occasionally a record ( second hand could not affort new ones )when i was at school. For some change reason I did not like dub, but that changed and love it now.For me collecting records started really when i went to england for my traineeship and met a rasta in a shop called reggae revive, which house was stocked with vinyl.I was stunned by this. And started buying almost everything I could find released before 1985.It became a way of life its not just collecting records its the whole scene which got my attention.
I agree with leggo rocker you got strange looks when people come over and see the half of your living room stocked with records, even my girlfriend thinks I lost it,she rather have the money then the records.
Nice to see I am not the only one with the obsession.

in the 5th grade my older brother turned mi on to peter broggs "rise and shine" cd, and i was an addict ever since. in high school i turned to vinyl because of cultural roots "hell ago pop". now a days im strictly vinyl. with ital collector mentors, i only buy one away heavyweight root. no time for slackness

Glad to say I never sold an album, vinyl or otherwise. Replacing wornout tapes is another matter.

Back in the day (mid-'70s) my friends and I didn't have much money, so we'd split up our musical "shopping lists" to make sure we each made unique purchases. Then we'd share the records around, taping each other's copies.

Most of my current re-issue buying is to replace those old, worn-out tapes, so hopefully some artists are finally getting paid!

When I'm looking through the bins, another thing that often happens is that I see something an old housemate used to have that I haven't heard since. I usually pick those up too, since they bring back more than a few memories!
Peace,

James

@ Lion (and all fellow junkies)

You won't find vinyl abuse in this house!

All records are cleaned on the Moth when I first get them, even new ones - BEFORE I play them. This makes an incredible difference to second hand vinyl. It has to be seen and heard to be believed.

Then all inner sleeves are changed for polylined ones so no paper scratching. Old sleeves are tucked into the record outer sleeve.

All outer sleeves are protected by PVC jackets.

The actual vinyl is kept outside the outer sleeve, inside the PVC jacket, to lessen the dreaded ringwear and split seams - and also means you don't wear out the open edge of the outer sleeve.

Fingers NEVER touch the record. Nor do Biro's or Marker pens!!! Argh, I hate WOL and WOS so much.

Records are stored upright in crates which are perfect size. I hate putting them on shelves, you can't flip through them. At the front and back of the crate is FOUR mailing stiffener card inserts so the records aren't pressing on the edge of the crates.

All stylii are kept tip top.

Turntables are reasonable quality and the carts are properly aligned with the minimum of tracking weight.

And don't tell me it is wrong, it is only about the music and an MP3 will do. Collecting records is about the beauty of the entire package. The rarity, the music, the artwork, the label, the condition and yes, the sight of them all sitting there in your room.

And finally, all the records get played. Lots!

-- Obsessed? Moi? --- Yeah, OK, guilty as charged!!

Irie! Well.... I feel like a total rookie compare to u guys!! I only have about 300-400 LPs.... same amount in 7inchers! :(

But... U have to start somewhere!!?? Right? :)

I wish I could trade away all my old hip-hop LPs for some sweet reggae!! But.... they have a place in my heart also...... so, I cant!!

Noooooooo! Don't do it, Funky Fred! :)

When I started listening to jazz and funk I sold off approximately 200 CD's of hiphop. Man do I regret that today when I the urge for hiphop has returned and I'm a bit more mellow on the jazz side.

Regarding collecting music I've always had a hard time selling stuff I bought. Lately I've found a quite good balance though. I always try to keep my record collection to a maximum of 1000 records and when I buy new LP's I usually sell some old ones off (there are _many_ albums I keep just because I wan't to keep a complete catalog of an artist/label but something I'll probably never listen to again).

but anyway also like leggo, when i first started out in london england while i was in the runnings between bredrins linkup's to talk and play reggae at various abodes. at times when certain non-reggaeites came around the yard to hear me play a few tunes, as soon as they saw me on the one's reggaefying the moment strange looks gazed upon my recprds and gasped with amazement. and furthermore saying where you get the money for all these records !! so my reply was turning up the music
