AAAHHHHHHHH !!!!! the joy's of record collecting

Post by DUDLEY 1NE »

how was it for you when you first started to collect records [reggae]

well when i first started out, it was a slow process using school lunch money, chores etc. it's been an expensive but enjoyable hobby. but some of the records i have has lasted longer than my football collecting cards as well comics too. after looking @ these pieces of footage fuels the drive even more, take a look and you see what i mean. i love collecting reggae no question !!

I am a 'born again' collector. I had a nice collection of original roots vinyl back in 1978 - 1984 (I think). Sadly, bit by bit, I sold it all off in the early 80s, usually for pennies - usually to score weed, food or petrol for my motorbike.

Now I am on my second time around, this time richer and hopefully wiser.

I think I have almost all of the stuff I had before, although I still need Big Joe - African Princess. But it has to be a REALLY good copy as I am fed up with rough records.

This time I have got into 12 inch 45s. I love them.

Friends and family look at me strangely now when they see the maybe 3,000 records stacked carefully in my room. I know they are thinking I've lost it. But I don't care. This is my library and I intend to keep it and grow it more and more.

I get a great joy from getting them, cleaning them on the Moth RCM and playing them. I play reggae vinyl almost constantly when I am at home, and when I can't play vinyl, I try to listen to my records via my radio show!

I've even bought a few new releases (of old material). But try as hard as I like, I just can't get into any new reggae. Much after 1985, with a few exceptions, and I can't seem to get on with the stuff.

Big up the collectors and selectors!

Having been a music junkie for over 40 years and buying reggae on and off for over 30 years I must admit I don't view it as "collecting". Maybe I am in denial. ;-)

Hey Funky Fred

I sold a ton of reggae vinyl in 1982 (as did a lot of people who were buying stuff in the mid 70's). Vinyl wasn't viewed as it is now. It was the only thing you could buy. (Pre-recorded tapes? No never). I sold my stuff as I needed cash and assumed I would be able to buy it back. The introduction of the CD in 1983 changed all that, of course!!

I definitely wouldn't sell anything now.

i ve been collecting for a bout 2 years now and in a massive way, considering i have about 20 years of music to catch up on, well ive caught up now, and im selling off a lot of records that i heard just to hear, and only keeping as little as i can, like leggo said ive sold a good amount just for weed, food, and gas money. Whats left? i have one crate with all my favorite roots LP, one crate for Limonious artwork LPs , 1 crate for studio one, & 1 crate for 80s/90s. Unfortunately my recent addiction to kung fu movies has a put almost a dead stop in my reggae collecting, think i pretty much own every LP i was looking for, now i just search for limonious artwork and dignitary stylish singles.
