interesting jg7, Tommy McCook and Raymond did a wicked little Strings and Things on the Trojan 4cd set, Muzik City, from a Prestige label seven. Yeah, it's hard to fathom violins successfully penetrating Jamaican sounds. That UK release overdub thing seems more common; some Banana UK singles of otherwise solid Studio One releases feature timid strings overdubs. Did anyone test that Negus Roots lp featuring strings that was on ebay a few weeks ago? Two dapper dreads on the cover...

Don't know if it could be called Roots, but there was the project,Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra by one of the Steele Pulse members on Mango at the end of the 80's that explored this.

The best piece of reggae with violin I have ever heard is undoubtedly LKJ's Liesense Fi Kill, the requiem played on a violin over heavy reggae drum and bass is just grand!

Justin Hinds & Dominoes has at least two songs with violin, "Sinners Where Are You Gonna Hide" and "If It's Love You Need". They come on the same 7" single on the Dutchess label.
