roots with violin...

Post by Litelet »

Hi again...

Just got a powerful dub 7" from the 70's that include a long violin solo...

Simplicity People - Halfway Tree

pon Gussie label

I have absolutely no idea of who is the player...
And wouldnt had thought of mixin violin with roots but great result... keep the sufferer sound ina melancolic way...

Do you know others 70s roots with violin and/or who is this violin player?

thx - litelet

"Dub To Africa" from "Dub To Africa" by Prince Far I has violin on it.

Noel "Sowell" Bailey is playing it.

If you're looking for more reggae with violin i'd recommend "Harry Mudie Meet King Tubby's In Dub Conference Vol 1"( www.roots-archives.com/release/2369 )and some of the canadian Jackie Mittoo Stuff - "Wishbone"( www.roots-archives.com/release/3836 ) and "Reggae Magic"( www.roots-archives.com/release/1638 ).
"Wishbone" is a reggae - funk & soul mix though..
Bless!

Nilo82, the Mudie's productions are obviously the most famous references for reggae & violion. Nevertheless, the riddim come from an early period (even if the dub set you mention was recorded later). The strings arrangements were added in London.

It is possible the tune you menton litelet was overdubed in London, or in anther place out of Jamaica. Just a guess tho'.

All 3 volumes of the Harie Mudie meets King Tubby In Dub Conference are worth picking up.

They are all great albums and very different to much of the Dub sound from that period.

Also contains a lot of string productions in the sound.

Don't forget the wicked Twinkle Brothers LP "Dub with strings" IT has some really hard Twinkle dubbs with a stringed orchestra including violins, chellos, etc. Good Stuff..early 90's if I remember right. ADam

litelet-
the violin player on that cut is known as "white rum" raymond.(from screaming target's liner notes.) apparently he was an old man who would play for the price of his next drink, and never recorded much other than a rare sit in.
