"As I Would Say"

Who originated this phrase as used in toasting? I'm just getting into DJs, and as you well know, it's everywhere.

"as i would tell it to you", "as i would say", "as the brother would say" - that's something that was most likely popularized by U-Roy, starting from when he was on the mic for Tubby's Home Town Hi-Fi in the late 60's.

it could have originated a few years earlier from one of the other big sound system DJ's of the day like Count Matchuki or King Stitt - Matchuki was the first one to actually deejay over records, probably going back to the mid-late 50's on Coxsone's Downbeat sound system.

but U-Roy really was the jumpstart of a deejay sensation when he scored 3 #1 singles in quick succession for Treasure Isle in January 1970, reviving Duke Reid's rocksteady rhythms starting with "Wake The Town" - and that's where you hear it on record.

deejays had been a fixture in dances for years before that point, but not many were on record (Count Matchuki and King Stitt, mostly), and fewer still were big hits - they were mostly looked at as a novelty. even the few records done by U-Roy just prior to his TI hits had nowhere near the same success.

I guess also that it started as DJ Thing....But later even some singers used it. But cant give an example for it. all I know that it is also mentioned by some singers. it is most likely a 70ies thing. That kind of Riddim did fit for some kind of relaxed talking like this. Today the Riddims are modern and it would sound a little bit strange I guess...I didnt hear one of the modern roots or dancehall singers or dj's say this..
