any sugestions of reggae songs to cover in a 77-punk way?

Post by clash77 »

Hi, for a few mouths I´ve been looking for a reggae song to play with my 77-punk inflenced band. something like the Clash did with police and thives and SLF did with Johnny was.
I found plenty of songs that are OK, but still not the perfect song to cover. If you could help me with any sugestions of a reggae song with lyrics about police, war, struggle or any subject that would fit with punk it would be great! I have already listen thru a lot of jimmy cliff,Heptones, bunny wailer, peter tosh and some bob marley.

Why do punks love reggae? I still don't get it. These two genres can't be more different, musically imho. No disrespect intended here, I got many punk friends over the years, but their music is so impossible to hear for me - so why is reggae so liked in the punk scene?

I think that punk and (a lot of) reggae got lyrics that got something to say about the real world and the life we live and that could be what brings punk and reggae together. Musically are punk and reggae very different but I like all kinds of music from 50´s rock n roll to metal.

Maybe you´ve heard the band Bad Brains that plays both punk and reggae?

I think it would be quite cool to play Capleton and Sizzla songs inna punk rock stylee. Actually they do anger and rage more convincing than punk rock or metal.

This, basically. I like both. Oi! too, which I suppose is a subset of punk.

I listen to different things, depending on my mood. As far as heavy metal goes, I like Motorhead, but that's about it...

Bad Brains. 30+ years on and their early hardcore punk songs are still amongst the fastest music I've ever heard...

TBH, most of their songs are completely incomprehensible without the lyric sheet and hard to follow even with. Or maybe that's just me.
