Lee Van Cleef's Shirley
Hello all, am hoping to get all ur input on two subject matters concerning same topic, Cleef's 1982 Donovan Germain Roots Radic backed killer tune Shirley. First, can anyone think of any other tracks using same riddim with that guitar intro? And secondly, concerning the topic of Shirley and/or use of mentioning cross the ocean & love letter theme, thats been used by Peter Metro, Jim Brown and Yellowman...have few others but wanted to get your input first. Been searching my catalogue front t back so any assistance would be appreciated..thanks..Whatever links to either would be huge..

An example of sorts is Barringtons Here I Come, which mentions a Rosie and coming over the ocean, but again, instances dont have to include both..just found this trend i cant shake

also one from Little John:
if all the girls should live across the ocean,
if all the girls should live across the sea,
then what a great swimmer I-man woulda be

Re: Lee Van Cleef's Shirley
it's based on the rhymes in the old folk song 'My bonnie lies over the ocean'
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
My Bonnie lies over the sea
My Bonnie lies over the ocean
Oh, bring back my Bonnie to me

Re: Lee Van Cleef's Shirley
Excellent call On The Bonnie reference..didn't know that. And correct, Little John used it on All Girls Across The Ocean. Besides Van Cleef, Metro and Yellowman each referenced it on Love Letter than Yellow again on If You Should Lose Me. Welton Irie also sang his version of Shirley and Barrington mentions it on Here I Come. Have found that others substitute name with Sharon or Mary and most often, Rose Marie, as Buro Banton and Lone Ranger both use derivative of the nursery rhyme. Then I guess any dj of the era using Vanity riddim play of it in some shape or form...the only example of same riddim used as Cleef's Shirley is Junior Keating's Conquering Lion...but thanks for the help fellas...

Pretty sure both Little John and Jug Head use a Joycie variation on this theme as well. As in Joycie gone over the ocean.
Isn't there a Little John that goes
Joycie gone over the ocean
Joycie gone over the sea
- and it may not be the next line, but-
The first time she write she say "hello sexy"
The next time she write she send me Clarke's booty
Could be remembering wrong

Billy Boyo samples it for verse or two on his Jah Jah Made Me To Be A MC
