There are a lot of great sound systems playing Notting Hill Carnival every year and I’m not going to start an argument about who is the best. However, there is no doubt at all that Gladdy Wax is one of the most entertaining sounds to check out. When I first went to Carnival, a friend took me along to listen to Gladdy play and I’ve been returning to the top of Portobello Road on every Carnival after that. That is why it is a great honour that Gladdy took the time to tell me the story of his life. Only after I stopped recording, he told me that he was playing records when Bob Marley first performed in Birmingham – something that most people probably would have mentioned right at the start.
