King Tubby top 5 albums

Post by gbougard »

If you had to recommend 5 King Tubby dub albums, which ones would you list?

Given it can be a little difficult to know for sure who mixed something out of Tubby's, but I think the below are Tubby (with the possible exception of Balmagie?) After 15 odd years of listening to reggae I can only just begin to tell Prince Jammy from Tubby, I'll be damned if I can spot Pat Kelly or Philip Smart from each other or Tubby, and who knows about early Scientist? Obviously later Scientist became easy to spot. but Early Scientist could easily be Tubby to my ears...

Balmagie Jam Rock

Sound System International Dub LP

Surrounded By The Dreads At The National Arena

Termination Dub

Dub From The Roots

There are some many albums I love by Tubby, these are my favourites

Rockers Meet King Tubby's In A Fire House
Great collaboration with Augustus Pablo, I like it more than the more famous "Meets Rockers Uptown".

Harry Mudie Meet King Tubby In Dub Conference Vol. 1
Tubby majestically remixes a shimmering mix of strings and electric piano from Harry Mudie.

Dub from the Roots (or Roots of Dub equally good)
Early Tubby, raw, heavy and effects filled.

The Legendary Skatalites in Dub
Tubby mixes up a horn heavy brew of classic Skatalites grooves

King Tubby Meets The Aggrovators at Dub Station
Again great horn lines, very melodic dub like the above pic.

Shalom Dub
Earlier sparser sound but great rhythms from The Aggrovators. CD sounds like a vinyl rip and sounds better on vinyl anyway!

Bonus picks:

Meets Jacob Miller In A Tenement Yard
Not for everyone but I really enjoy this mix of Tubby magic and crazy synth work, but listen to before buying!

King Tubby's Prophecy of Dub
Great Yabby You source material dubbed to oblivion, great Blood and Fire sound quality.

Good choices, agree with all of those

Yea I was thinking those two too, although possibly heroes is Scientist rather than Tubby? please correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the Herb Dub Collie Dub mixes of the skatalites Tubby?

o
I also thought that was mixed by Scientist despite saying Tubby on the cover.... but then as I said in my post I can't tell them all apart anyway

@Congo Bunny

I have a cd called The Legendary Skatalites in Dub which I think is the same as the album Heroes of Reggae in Dub but with the songs from the Herb Dub Collie Dub album as bonus tracks. Can't say for sure though?

Think it is Tubby on these but not sure about Freedom Sounds in Dub, if anyone has the CD Blood and Fire are usually good with the sleeve note info of who did what on their reissues.

Also worth checking the Father of Dub 3 cd collection. It has no sleeves notes, very bargain basement and about £5. But actually a really good mix, although very random, of Tubby tracks. From all eras but great to just chuck on. If you want a taste of his work and are not too bothered about getting anything chronological worth a punt for a fiver. I don't know what other people think about it but I have about ten of his albums and this is a nice listen for a starter.

Father of Dub - definitely worth a punt, some tracks duplicated if I remember right, some bogus "Lee Perry" tracks and some dodgy mastering (sounds horrible on iPod) but pretty good selection for the money I would say.
