Lee Perry, the good the bad and the ugly

Post by leggo rocker »

After posting on 'worst dub LP' thread I'm prompted to start a thread on what we all think are good cuts by Lee Perry and which of the Upsetters work we find, well, upsetting!

I'll start with one very good and one very bad!

King Tubby Meets The Upsetter - King Tubby Meets The Upsetter At The Grass Roots Of Dub

I have loved this LP since it was first (re)released in the UK on the Studio 16 pressing!

Return of Pipecock Jackson

Sorry but I just don't really 'get' this LP!

I personally do not like Perry albums after "Time Boom X...De Devil Dead." I tried giving Secret Laboratory a try, but alas, it tended to be one of those later unbearable On-U releases.

----

The Good---I'm really a big fan of the Twin Roots track "Know Love" and others of the era, especially Heptones tracks.

Hi,

Have to say "Super Ape" has got to be one of the greatest.

Know it s not dub but just had to say.

I like Upsetters Dub 14 Blackboard Jungle.

Also Upsetters Shop Vol 1 Uppsetters in dub ( a good compilation.

Don`t have any bad ones but then I ain`t got that many.

Respect

Album wise I like:
Augustus Pablo Meets Lee Scratch Perry - Augustus Pablo Meets Lee Perry At Black Ark

Song wise one of my faves is: Huzza A Hana

Like Rootsman I don't own much 'Scratch' wax so....no bad ones yet.

I think your shite selection doesn't actually have anything to do with Scratch - if my memory serves me right - it just mentions his name in a blatant attempt to shift wax on Perry reputation.

And this is often the problem with some of the poorer output attributed to Perry, it's bootlegs, out-tapes, and stuff often not meant for front line release.

i think you're right leggo rocker..having said that, have you heard FIRE IN DUB? on here Perry ruins some fine riddims by things like shouting JAH JAH JAAH incessantly and monotonously and he even destroys the best track on the album..COVETIOUS GIRL...by wailing "and i am christmas " halfway through a brilliant track...no need for it..the track has sweet female vocals already..who needs Perrys voice ruining dub ?
