Roots Archives and Facebook.

Specially with the spam invading this forum and web designers with little to no time to fight this, I have been thinking of setting up some sort of forum on facebook.
It might not be the best place for it, but on the other hand, Facebook is a good place to meet new 'friends', have a little look into their personal life (if they let you) and share whatever interest you have with them.

I have created the ['Official Roots-Archives Forum'](https://www.facebook.com/pages/Official ... 272?ref=hl) on Facebook.

Anyone can join, leave messages, reply to topics, post videos or pictures, as long as it is related to whatever we do here on RA.
With the use of tags (although not everyone can use them yet), it is even possible to search for older topics.

The good thing is we won't have to go through all this spam everyday. We can keep the community alive (some of us here go a long way back).

It is all new to me, so this whole facebook page will change as we go.

No, not the end of Roots-Archives. Just a new era if people are interested. As far as I'm concerned this website will still be here in years to come.

That said, I am getting fed up with all the spam myself and just looking for options to keep this community forum together.

Facebook could be an extension to what we have here. I realise not everyone on RA has a Facebook account. Plenty who do have one though,

This is just to see if the both can co-excist next to each other. As I said, Facebook does have its good points as well. when it comes to posting videos and pictures.

Stupid question, but why doesn't the owner of RA want to sort out the spam and get the forum running back as it was?

I don't get how FB is a solution to the problem....

If they don't care enough about the site to sort out the spam then surely they don't mind handing the reigns over to someone who does?

I really don't mean this to be rude or disrespectful, I just don't get why they seem to have put so much work into this site and then cut it adrift

I have to agree, it seems to me that for whatever reason there is a lack of interest from the owners / moderators to address the spam problems that are killing this forum.

This is a real shame because I know that a lot of time and hard work has been invested over the years to make this site what it is (or what is was).

Surely investing a bit more effort to install some sort of spam blocker would be much more time effective than having to go into the message board every day and delete these adverts.

It seems to me that Facebook is just an alternative means to shy away from addressing the problems that exist right here. I for one don`t use Facebook and have no intention of starting now. What I would like to see is the spam being stopped and if the owners have no interest in achieving this then like Congo Bunny said, hand the reigns over to someone who does care and who has the knowledge to sort it out.

This is a real shame because I know that a lot of time and hard work has been invested over the years to make this site what it is (or what is was).

You raise a really good point here, the value of Roots archives is not just the hours and hours of hard work that the creators went to to make the database.

It's also all the hard work of the contributors to the forum. I would say that almost on a weekly basis I have a question about something and I search the forum and find an answer in it... that hard work and history shouldn't be lost either.

I'm not saying that the owner should give RA away or sell it anything else like that. I just mean allow one of your users who has a bit of techy knowledge access to the back end to add a module in (from what ever platform this forum runs on) to stop the spam.

I used to own a website, and I know that you can allow users access. I gave two different people that I hardly knew at all access to my site and they did things that I could not technically speaking.

When they had finished I removed their access, RA could do that too

I won't be here for much longer, I know that. Not if things continue as they do. I have addressed the website owner(s) several times and nothing happens.
There will come a day, I am fed up with deleting spam and I know when that day comes, it will be the end of it, for a lot of us.

Facebook for me is not some sort of alternative to shy away from the problem to me. But it is an alternative.
So you can either join and give it a go, or join another reggae forum, that's your choice. There's plenty of them on the net.

I think these comments says it all. It seems pretty obvious to me that the owners / moderators have lost interest in this site. That is a shame because a lot of members are interested in what occurs here on RA and are keen to stay and participate in discussions.

Things do change, but not always for the best. OK, as you say Facebook is an alternative, but its not an alternative that everyone wants. This site is important to a lot of people as a means of learning and sharing knowledge. It is second to none in terms of so many things.

So, before you turn your back on this website and walk away why not run a poll and find out whether people would rather join you on your new Facebook adventure or remain within RA.

If enough people would rather stay then why not the owners allow the right members with the knowledge to do what is required to stop the spam and run the site as it could and should be run.
