I noticed the spam topic was closed yet no official response from roots archives, i see many people asking why don't you delete the accounts of the spammers which is easy to do of course. Others commented "because they just don't care anymore" i wondered if this was true?
Thought i'd re-open the thread here and see if there has been any updates?
All forums without anti-spam security are targetted today, you can get thousands of posts each day, it should be pretty sure to install a capcha plugin via askimet to spot bots joining and posting, disabling URL's for new accounts would also deter any human spammers a little although they would still get indexed.
Someone just needs to actively deal with it, i manage several sites and have dealt with spam like this many times. Having more moderators would help of course but it seems someone doesn't like that idea or never announced the new mod? u can delete each day but u really need to work on the security of the site to get rid of spam, it's not hard when you know how, if you don;t have plugins then fliter out commonly used soam words which keep appearing in the post, also block people posting more than 3-4 posts in 2mins say... loads of rules u can make to secure the place up.
I hope spam doesn't kill RA off. Thanks to the mod who has been manually keeping the main area clean but i see the others are full of spam.
(Move this to the off topic section if needed i forgot i was in the reggae bit)

Good advices got ignored all the way. I guess the mod cannot act like he wants to.
Maybe the owners of this site need to order concrete mixers every day and are happy with RA like it is. Great concrete mixed up shooked up world ...

Indeed there's little I can do when it comes to changing the website and all that. I'm just here to (un)delete messages and keep an eye on things.
I will try and email Mat (the wizard guy) and tell him (again) about the situation. I have texted Seb about a month orso ago, but no reply.
Of course, I have read all the good advice and responses concerning the spam and will pass it on to Mat. Hopefully he can use it to build a better security around this forum.

Re: Spam problem?
I always loved this forum it kinda took over from B+F i thought after b+f went quite and these 2 always been my fav. It's very easy to see the spam bots destroy your site in days by flooding with literally thousands of posts which are manually too difficult to delete, it's ok if done under one username but usually they use many names so need to block IP ranges and implement other security which is why there is need to jump on top of the problem before it gets outta control which is why i posted about it, i seen this happen before and event lost sites or gave up on them due to the huge amount of spam and the massive job fixing it.
Obvious thing to do would be to delete the accounts of the spammers or all those since it started and introduce capcha codes for new registration just as a first step.
Hope it gets fixed...

You will be surprised to get an "official answer" but indeed we are aware of this spam problem and we are looking for a solution.
In fact we are thinking about the future of Roots Archives and some changes and announcements are coming up soon.
Special message to our mod : your dedication to this website amazes me every day, we're coming back to you very soon

Thanks Mat & Seb. I only came to this forum after the updates stopped, but having seen what you all were able to do makes me very excited to know you'll have an active part in the future sustainability of what is probably the best historical reggae site online.
