Similar to Black Uhuru of Michael Rose's era

Post by rhuand »

Hello, I'm relatively new to reggae music and culture. One of my favorite bands is Black Uhuru during its 1980-1984 era with Michael Rose. Sly & Robbie's mix of roots reggae and dub is one of the best things I've heard not only in reggae genre but in the whole musical sphere. Just blows me away. I was wondering if there's anything in the line of Red, Sinsemilla and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. I've searched quite a bit and still can't find anything like it.
Can you guys help me?
Thanks in advance!

BU have done other albums too. Look online for a discography, a good place to start would be here. Check RAS records, Island records etc. There are easily available two disc sets, at least two very similar ones, all ought to be available from Amazon.
Check the track Slaughter..profoundly good.

Welcome in - there are several compilations of Sly and Robbie's Taxi sound. Some of the big tunes on single are:

Sitting and Watching - D. Brown
Fort Augustus - Jr. Delgado
Baltimore - Tamlins
Jimmy Riley

Loads more still, it's a great style.

The Sly & Robbie TAXI FARE compilation contains typical sound associated with drumbar and basspear

From a voice point of view Mykal/Michael Rose/Roze is truly unique, like Isaacs Gregory is/was - RIP.

MR style is very characteristic, with increasing ticks/tricks as time went on, and no similar alternative (despite people speak of a similar singing pattern with Don Carlos or Jr Reid - not at all IMHO)

Hence, youthman: buy anything with Rose if its the voice you're after.

As far as post-Rose Black Uhuru stuff, some is great, some is disastrous. I'd buy all the stuff with Jr Reid, but after that, sorry Duckie & friends, but it no good.

"Stanahoi, ding ding ding, two two twelve" MR singing style rules - and can get annoying - and I'm sure my friends Sly & Robbie agree, with ALL due raspect.

Michael Rose S&R 1993 produced classic:

You also get similar Uhuru vibes with his WARRIOR LP:

...and AFRICAN ROOTS LP:

Hello, Sean. Hope you're feeling fine today.
I know about BU's other albums, but still, I think Michael Rose's era is the best. It's a very unique style, even lyrics-wise. I was wondering if there's anything like it in the reggae genre.

Hello, Vtov. Thanks for your answer.
I've been listening to Sly & Robbie stuff but nothing like Michael Rose's Black Uhuru. I guess they just were too good :D

Check out a band called Midnight Riders, they are very good. They also sound very similar to Black Uhuru.

Tracks like "Cross The Border", "Me A No Gun Man" & "Youthman Invasion" very reminiscent of Black Uhuru
