Since You Are Gone/Since You're Gone

Absolutely love this riddim mainly due to the Roman Stewart & Trinity cut that I have had on 12" since it came out.

Checked on a number of riddim sites and they give the following versions;

1. Pat Kelly - "Since You Are Gone"
2. David Isaacs - "Since You Are Gone" (="Give Love A Try")
3. Upsetters - "Soulful I"
4. Roman Stewart & Trinity - "Since You're Gone"

I have all of these, but all but the latter are too early for me.

I recently found that Mystic Eyes' "I'm Drifting" is this riddim, which got me thinking that there may be more out there that aren't listed.

Also heard The Terrors - "Assemble Not Thyself" and this does sound similar, but I am not 100% sure. Is it the same?

Incidentally, I am not so keen on the "Give Love A Try" (Delroy Wilson, for example) version.

So if anyone knows of any other versions of this riddim from ideally around 1979 please let me know.

the Upsetter version I have listed weirdly as Soulful 'One' on my iPod is such a sweet track.
I've been hearing this for a lot of years - still bright and fresh - gorgeous.
The Pat Kelly version I have also on Cd is kind of mangled sounding. The bass is lost and it is weak. Great voice but I'd rather do karaoke on the Upsetter track.

Nice but not the same effect by any means...

In terms of the chord progression, typically it is pretty simple song so there have got to be hundreds of songs with the same progression/arrangement - sure there must be ska stuff with the same - but not the same song necessarily - of course.
'She take of her skirt and she tear off me shirt'! nice!

For me the killer tracks is Soulful I.
Soulful Roots Studio One on Roots Dub too - a bit of Ranglin fret meddling - OK mostly, but some nice 'bone too...

oh and the version I have of Pat Kelly is called 'Since you are gone'.
Sound quality is awful - CD album is Dry Acid on Trojan I think.
They have a really dodgy remastering history I must say. they have reissued so much great stuff - and believe me I'm glad to have it - but their skillz is often in the toilet!

Thanks for these. Must admit I am looking for pre-80s versions though. In particular, on that exact Roman Stewart riddim cut.

Funnily enough, I've had the Alpheus album ("Quality Time") for years and I don't think I've ever played it all the way through. I just can't get on with his vocals. Not sure if it's the content, delivery or maybe both!

[Reggae Rhythm Update]

Yeah it's odd about Alpheus. Personally, I love his voice and the way he sings songs that have universal messages (not too specialized). He also has this wholesome image with songs about his parents and what not, and prefers to sing on oldies rhythms or at least rhythms that sounds like oldies. For me, that all ads up to someone perfect for my specific taste, but I have heard that people can't get into his voice.
