Re: Please Explain Solomon A Gunday to me
Funny, I was wondering about this just yesterday...
I'm thinking that it's just a nice simple (nursery) rhyme as was used frequently in 70's lyrics (see Wikipedia for more on that). Also it seems to be some kind of weird food/dish (well, weird for a vegetarian anyway), herring & capers & things!!
I'd be interested to know if there is any other meaning behind the reggae use of Soloman A Gundy though...

yes greetings biscomassive and all roots archive massive.. i think you got something there with the weird food and nursery rhymes mattp ..the french "salmagundi" (or "salmagondin/salmigondis") is the name of a mixed dish, usually consisting of fish, eggs & onions etc. the same word is used also to describe any kind of mixture or miscellany. somehow this word inspired someone to write "solomon grundy" - a 19th century english nursery rhyme that went "solomon grundy, born on a monday, christened on a tuesday, married on a wednesday, took ill on thursday, worse on friday, died on saturday, buried on sunday, this is the end, of solomon grundy." ..now, jamaicans have their own take on the above mentioned dish, called "solomon gundy" ..never had it myself, but as far as my ovastanding goes it´s more like a fish pâte.. this was also the name of a tune that eric monty morris cut in 64. the "solomon grundy" in big youths tune turns into "solomon gunday", who will "kill you on a thursday, rob it on a wednesday". so it´s just a bit of wordplay..but it gets a bit "salmagundi" with the eggs and fish and all..
