Reggae goes Funk

Post by =Nilo82= »

In the 70's reggae was influenced by funk and soul-music from the US. There were of course some awesome cheesy records with old rocksteady tunes now backed by strings and stuff like that; an effort to cross over and reach out for new markets.
But there were as well serious funk-reggae records which(since i love 70's funk and soul) sounds still great to me today.
I'm listening to reggae music now for 6 years and concentrated on the deep 70's roots, rub-a-dub, early digital and studio 1 no matter what year. That's why i don't know that much about that reggae-funk thing. Which records would you recommend? I'll give you a taste of what i know and like - please help me make up that list. Who knows, probably a new category for RA?
Bless, nilo

Matumbi - Best Of Matumbi
Jackie Mittoo - Almost every record
The Chosen Few - Hit After Hit
Harry Mudie Meet King Tubby's In Dub Conference Vol 1 (kind of Soul Funk Dub Reggae)

Tappa Zukie - Freak 12" is a monster funk classic! Extremely hard to find the disco though.

I assume you've listened to the Jamaican-Funk-collection released by Blood & Fire called Darker than Blue?

kalcidis, 70s roots is a fine thing, for reggae funk you just have to go back from mid 70s to early 70s or late 60s, there is a lot funky kingston stuff recorded around that time ......... can't tell you concrete examples, but there is a lot, one of the funkiest artists i heard recently is owen gray, i'm sure he also could have been amongst the best u.s. counterparts of that time.

just check the camel compilations, there are some ....

You should :), 'coz funky kingston & Studio one funk are really good, but to me "Darker than blue" comes close to perfection.
