Greetings everyone.
Lately I'm hearing many stories about the vinyl-business that is going down.
Most of this business is taking place on the internet these days. Hardly any good roots reggae lp's and 12inches to be found in the 'normal' record store in town.
On the internet one can buy a roots tune in the mp3-format. Many reggae dj's use or start using Ipod, mp3-players and cd's.
Is there a future for reggae music on vinyl? Or are we gonna have to buy the tunes in mp3-format on the internet? Could it be that in a few years time from now we'll be talking about files instead of reggae albums or reggae lp's?

Future for reggae music on vinyl?

Re: Future for reggae music on vinyl?
Yes vinyl will become an extinct format, just as cd days will be numbered at sometime,.There is no real market for it anymore besides collectors wich to my sadness is not large enough to suppport such an industry.Saying that i believe(hope) a handfull of vinyl will alwys be made for certain releases to satisfy that niche market of collectors.
I was thinking of all the vinyl from days of old that have made their way to landfill sites.Thats a whole lot of plastic rotting the earth right now ,probably with a half life of at least 100- 1000 years.Music shouldn't be hurting the earth.Yes there is alot more harmfull and abundant pollutants doing worse but we could look at this like a pro enviro movement. To have just enough vinyl releases that are cherished and dont become disposable garbage, like they were at one time.Like cd's are now, wich i am sure are filling up land fill sites quite nicely now a days.

Re: Future for reggae music on vinyl?
i would say mp3 is wack. i buy records and record them to hd then i burn cds and hopefully they have a pioneer so i can use it like vinyl, i dont like the carrying of records i have no car and i think, records are to big and to thick to carry all 45s but i like to have them at home. records sells still going, not like in past but still ok, many of my friends still rate vinyl ova anything else.

Re: Future for reggae music on vinyl?
Thats neat.I would like to know more of the recycling process they use in Jamaica, with all theese old 45's.Any links with info on it?.Like the process of removing the paper label, how they remove all impurities, and how they reconstitue it into a reusable format especially vinyl.I know here they are quite picky on what plastics are recyclable, for it has to be of certain quality to be reusable.I also wonder why they dont market it like that ,it would be such a selling feature theese days.At least stamp the music with the recycle feature. Thanks

Vinyl Can't Done!!!
Tapes Dead!!
VHS Dead!
Cd soon Done---
But Vinyl will live on...
And since LP vinyl is an acetate based product, it can be broken and recycled into P.E.T. material just as some clothing companies have products made from recycled plastic botttles, old newspapers, etc... The process is alot cheaper than most think!!!
I don't see there ever being a concern from record makers about enviro-friendly LPs but I know most of the covers nowadays are post-recylable and most are using soy-based inks as well...At our shop, we recycle old lps by pinning them around our shop as decoration, no matter the artist...In a sense we are recycling by not just tossing out broken/defective vinyl and using them as "ARTWORK".... Gots to start somewhere...
