Garvey plays a fundemental role in the Rastafarian movement. For he said "look to the east for the coming of a black King" and then shortly after Selassie was crowned King in 1932.He also founded the "Black Star Line" in 1919 which everyone here is more than familiar with.

Garvey was a Pan Aficanist who wanted the separation of the races so that the greatest of the African people could be restored. Influenced by Booker T. Washington.

He was about nationalism, racial pride, and independence through the liberation of the mind and economic unity and prosperity.

He preached that the black race was a once mighty and noble race and through slavery it had been destroyed and tricked into becoming a Negro and Colored self hating race, but that through his teachings and philosophies the "New Negro" had no fear, but had pride and unity. "Up You Mighty Race You Can Accomplish What You Will" was his cry.

Garvey had his own army, own marching band, league of nurses, flag, anthem, newsletter, etc. all cumulating in the Black Star Line. Pageantry and fiery speeches of pride in Harlem were methods Garvey used to gain followers. Garveyism was something that was real and tangible so much so that the J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI destroyed his reputation and organization the UNIA.

Malcolm X's father was a Garveyite who was killed because of his beliefs.

MLK was influenced by Gandhi. MLK was about integration through nonviolence.

He became notorious for leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott. His life was threatened daily, but he was true to his nonviolent ways.

MLK is famous for his "I Have A Dream" speech at the March on Washington but if you can read the entire speech not just the the snippets they play on MLK day.

MLK was much more broad in his battles, they were different times of course so MLK was involved in the Anti-Vietnam movement, poor peoples rights, desegregation was his main battle though.

You might want to focus on how the FBI infiltrated and spied on both men and ultimately had a hand in destroying both men their organizations. Focus on what happened to the Garveyites how they were lynched and killed and Garvey was discredited while he was incarcerated and deported and what happened to the Poor People's Campaign when MLK was killed.
