Coxsone Dodd - Was he good or bad for reggae music?

Post by leggo rocker »

I feel like opening a possibly contentious thread. ;)

Mr Dodd has been revered as one of the founding father's of reggae music, if not THE founder of it.

But was he really good for reggae music and the artists that produced it?

Or was he just a sharp business man exploiting the vast wealth of penniless ghetto talent and gave too little back in return?

I don't have an opinion on this, yet, as I simply don't know enough about this subject.

For someone who claims not to have an opinion yet, your post reads like you are answering your own questions there.

No, I really don't know where I stand on this one yet. Maybe I take a double view. He was great for reggae, without him it may never have got so big. Maybe. But then I wonder of he may have been a very sharp businessman and made his money by exploiting the artists. Some bad stuff has been said about his business methods.

I am simply forwarding views that I have heard expressed. I wasn't there, and I don't know anyone who was.

The point of this post is to try and tease out some views, or even some anecdotes from the Studio One era.

I wasn't there too, so, to be frankly, imo it's the music that really matters, as we won't find the truth...

Music is one thing. And I love it. History is another thing, which I also love. So I am trying to learn about some reggae history / politics.

It's a rhetorical question. Designed to start a sensible and hopefully informed thread on the contribution and impact of Dodd on reggae music.

Take it or leave it.

If you don't have anything to offer, then just leave it.
