It is Lee himself singing, the language is Hindi!
Bird In Hand is actually a cover of a song from a 1950 Indian film called "Babul" (dir. Raj Kapoor). The original song, written by Naushad, is sung by Talat Mehmood and Shamshad Begum. If you want to know what Lee's singing (check it out!), the original words are:
Milte hi aankhein dil hua deewana kissi ka (x2)
Afsana mera ban gaya afsana kissi ka
Puchho na mohabbat ka asar, haay na puchho
Dam bhara mein koyi ho gaya, parwaana kisika
Afsaana mera ban gaya, afsaana kisika

Re: bird in hand- singer?
I long wondered the same thing as this is one of my BLACK ARK favorites and finds its way onto most of my Scratch compilations and mixes.
It is Sam Carty singing the haunting "Bird in Hand". He also recorded "Life is a Flower" and "I Don't Mind" for Scratch. Both appear on the BLACK ARCHIVES album on Justice League -http://www.roots-archives.com/release/2 ... light=3533
I also recomend Prince Jazzbo's DJ version of "I Don't Mind" called "Live Good Today" on the NATTY PASSING THRU(aka ITAL CORNER) album-
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/559
Back to "Bird in Hand", the lyrics are actually in Hindi. The song itself is a cover of a Hindi tune called "Milte Hi Aankhein" The lyrics are:
Milte hi aankhein dil hua deewana kissi ka (x 2)
Afsana mera ban gaya afsana kissi ka
Puchho na mohabbat ka asar, haay na puchho
Dam bhara mein koyi ho gaya, parwaana kisika
Afsaana mera ban gaya, afsaana kisika
As soon as eyes met, somebody's heart went mad
My tale has happened, somebody's tale
Don't ask me love's effect, Oh! don't ask
I took a breath and somebody happened, somebody's lover.
For the whole lowdown check out this link to "Station Underground Reporting"

Hope this answers your questions.
Also on the topic of Sam Carty- can anyone tell me if they've heard Sam Carty & the Astronauts "Slackness" LP and if so is it in a similar vein to his work for Scratch.
Thanx,
Papa D

Re: bird in hand- singer?
I just saw E.'s posting(it posted while I was writing my response) but its definately Sam Carty singing "Bird in Hand" and not Scratch himself. Even though I didn't know what he was singing I always asscociated "Bird in Hand" with Sam Carty. If you listen to the other two songs I listed, "I Don't Mind" & "Life is a Flower" you can definately hear that it's same singer as "Bird in Hand".
Also if you check out the article at Eternal Thunder it quotes a piece by Neil Spencer from New Music Express (Oct. 1976)who was at the Ark when the song was being recorded and actually spoke to a "young singer by the name of Sam Carter, who has a song named "Milit Y Ankee", which he informs me is Indian for 'The First Time I Saw You'.
Respect,
Papa D

Sam Carty? Maybe, but it isn't Lee Perry. You have to read the book "people funny boy" a very good book. Perry himself can't remember the singer of the song

No problem. I just came by it myself the other day. Funny how these things go.

Sam Carty & The Astronauts "International Slackness" is one of the coolest LP's ever. So smooth yet so skanking. If you love the songs he cut for Scratch, than this LP is a must for you.
