Post by Greg »

Are you getting this story mixed up with the recording they made for Coxsone Dodd that wasn't released, that they then bought from Dodd eventually and then self released? There was quite a delay in them buying it after they realised that he had no immediate plans to put it out.

I can't recall how this tune was released or what year, if the Clinch imprint was put together for it or not, or what date it came out, I think my copy is Soundtracs, though I have other tunes by them on this 7" label, and I might be getting a bit confused.

I'm waffling now aren't I?

For an interesting listen check out Carlton (Manning) and the Shoes 'Happy Land' a prototype cut of Satta, I have this on Studio One Roots a white label bootleg of S1 prods... I think it may also appear on one of the Soul Jazz comps too now...

"Satta Massagana" was recorded in 1969. Coxsone Dodd refused to release it as too radical for the time. Two years later the Abyssinians released it on their own Clinch label and the history of reggae proved that Dodd was wrong.

Han, you're confusing the album with the single. The album "Satta" was from 1975, the original version of the song "Satta" was recorded in 1969 and released on 45 a couple years later. I haven't listened to it recently, but if I recall correctly, the song "Satta" on that Clive Hunt album was recorded around '75, and is not the original version put out on single in the earlier part of the decade. I could be wrong about that though.

You're right ReggaeFire, the version on the '75 album is not the one that was recorded in '69 and then issued in '71. The one on the LP has been recorded during the sessions for the album, along with the other tracks on it : same rootsy sound.

Is there a Coxsone produced "Declaration Of Rights" 7 inch? Was this recorded around '69 also?
