Jah Lion - Rockers Dub - 30 pieces of dub - info wanted

Post by leggo rocker »

I just got hold of this absolutely brilliant LP.

[cover=6242,4473]

It has a plain cover and so no sleeve notes. It sounds in parts like Blackbeard was involved. Then there's a track that sounds like it's a lost track from Rockers Uptown by Pablo!

Anyone know any details about this LP?

It has to be Canadian since it has two dubs from Leroy Browns album Color Barrier (the title track and Gone Gone).

The title track is the dub of Big Joe’s “30 Pieces Of Silver which was a 12” on the Jah Lion Label. I think it was cut on Delroy Wilson’s “Money”. The producer credited on the 12” was P Jammie (sic) and I assume they mean Lloyd James.

On the CD the tracklist is mixed up and 30 Pieces of Dub is actually track 3 which is shown in the tracklist as Gone Dub. I don’t know if your vinyl album is the same. Interestingly, the dub of 30 Pieces Of Silver is missing form the B side of the 12”. Instead there is a mistitled dub of “The Winner”.

The CD liner notes credit the following producers:

Winston Curtis all tracks except:

Tracks 1& 10 – Produced by B Lee
Tracks 3& 4 – Produced by W Jones
Track 6 – Produced by D Craig
Track 8 – Produced by W Robinson

This is not much help as I don’t know which tracklist they were working from.

Regards

I seems to remenber about the track list mixed up. I have to check to confirm, but here is the infos I have:

It's a mix bag of UK & Jam prods:

Tracks on side 1:

30 Pieces Of Dub > dub to Delroy Wilson "Money" (didn't know the Big Joe cut) / Bunny Lee Production

Africano Dub > UK style / Winston Curtis Production

Gone Dub > Dub to Leroy Brown "Gone Gone" relaesed on Jah Lion 12"

No Dub Like Dis Ya Dub > "Ain't no love" vocal snippet / Winston Jones production

Night Ravers Dub > Horn cut to ?? / Winston Curtis Production

Tracks on side 2:

Jack The Ripper > Melodica dub to Barry Brown "30 Pieces Of Silver" / D Craig production

Englishman Dub > UK style dub / Femal vocal "reggae woman" snippets/ Winston Curtis production

Wicked Man Dub > W Robinson production

Mad Man Dub > Winston Curtis production

Fisher Man Dub > Bunny Lee production

My copy of the CD is credited to Selassie I Rockers.

Re the links with Canada and Big Joe, I bought this in Toronto two years ago and made the following notes:

Delroy Wilson - Money Trouble/Money Disco 12" (Hot Disc IRC 017, Canada)

"Only Delroy is listed on the label but there's an uncredited DJ on the second half of both sides. Most people say it's Trinity but it sounds more like Big Joe to these ears. Side A is Delroy's 'Money' and Side B, listed elsewhere as a dub of the same, is actually a Vocal/DJ Discomix of 'Have Some Mercy'.

The cut on 30 Pieces of Dub is definitely the dub of the Big Joe 12" Single - 30 Pieces Of Silver - Jah Lion 12". The bits of DJ vocal left in match exactly.

What I would be interested in knowing is whether it is the same as the DJ bit on the end of your Delroy Wilson - Money Trouble/Money Disco 12" (Hot Disc IRC 017, Canada).

Sadly I have no way of checking, Rob. They sound like they came from the same source recording, but all I own are:

Delroy's vocal (from the Money 12")
Big Joe's DJ (from the Money 12")
Big Joe's Dub (from the 30 Pieces CD)

I don't have 2 DJ versions to compare I'm afraid.
