just curious, what causes skips in records? is it an error in the press, meaning there would be skips in the same spot on all the presses, or is it random?

Re: vinyl skips
All vinyl has grooves in which the needle move along to pick up the sound.
Usually a record will skip if it has been scratched by bad handling or being dropped, etc. This breaks a part of the groove allowing the needle to 'skip' out of the groove and into another.
skipping can also occur if something is stuck within the groove, like a piece of dirt, as the needle hits it and pops out the groove which is why skipping can sometimes be 'fixed' by careful cleaning.
There are occasions when the is a defect in the record which im unsure how it happens in the manufacture process but the groove gets blocked by accident -the plastic of the record seems to cover the groove.
They wouldnt release records intentionally with skips and any records that happen to have them can have them for many different reasons; im sure there is more technical reasons for these things then what i have explained.
A common error during manufacturer is mispressing of the centre hole in 7" this effects the sound and is more common then finding a (new) skipping record.
