Tribal War Versions

Post by Roots_Rocker_Matt »

Hello roots fans!

A few years back when I first discovered Buju Banton's works, a favourite song of mine by him was "Tribal War".

When I found out about and listened to the John Holts earlier, rootsy version, I rarely go back to the dancehall version :)

I want to find and hear the different versions of this song, because it is one of my favourites, a perfect mix of conscious lyrics and sweet rythme.

Here are the ones I know of so far:

Buju Banton - Tribal War
John Holts - Tribal War (the best, original version?)
Little Roy - Tribal War
Yellowman ft. George Nooks - World War

Version I haven't heard:

George Nooks - Tribal War
Little Roy - Tribal War Dub (from free for all dub?)

I did a search for the song title in the archives, but I know a few songs with that title that aren't the same song, ex. Third World - Tribal War.

Thanks in advance for any info.(tu)

I'm curious as to which is the original original cut of Tribal War. Who actually wrote the song? A genius, obviously, but how about a name?

Definatley jahganja7! The thing about the little roy cut is I heard at a roots dance and asked the dj who it was? I haven't been able to get ahold of that Little roy LP... was his cut released on any other compilations?

On Wackies, there's a great cut by Noel Delahaye. The flip is a killer trombone version.
The Georges Nooks cut is great too. There must be hundreds of versions of this wonderful song/riddim...

I could listen to a thousand versions! :D

Gregory Issacs has a Tribal War song. Same or different?

EDIT: I just saw the credited writer (on the vinyl in the removed ebay link) is Issacs, so must be different. Jah Titus let us know its Little roys song, so I'll be on the lookout for his writing credit. (tu)
