Sugar Minott Question

Post by Jason Allen »

I am trying to wrap up my Sugar Minott collection. I, so far, have almost everything up until '85. Here's my question :

Are "Bittersweet" and "More Sugar" worthwhile? I ask because I NEVER see them listed in people's top five Sugar LPs.

Also, are these LPs fairly easy to come by?

MUCH Thanks for any info.

Jason

Like you I have picked up almost every sugar album upto "Dancehall 87" and "Them a Wolf"

"Bittersweet" imo is a very worthwhile album and definately one to pick up. Its a typical Sugar Minott album and that cannot be a bad thing.

"More Sugar" is the only one I have not collected, for some reason it has never appealed to me. I dont know why really, it just looks a bit of a mish mash album.

Hope this helps, and someone please put me right on the "More Sugar" album if my gut feeling is wrong.

Regards

"More Sugar" is the weakest of the Studio One releases. Coxsone Dodd put it together after Sugar had left his stable already. It has the usual overdubs like drumsounds etc. from that era (1982). If you want a comparison in sound then check Freddie McGregors "I am ready".

"Bitter Sweet" is a very nice production by (then) Prince Jammy.
[cover=7144,856]
is the same record on a different label. Personally I prefer this cover ;)
rougher yet

Thanks for the input Rootsman & Bellyman. Sounds like I should make a point to search out Bittersweet/ Give the People.
If I run into More Sugar for a decent price, I'll probably pick it up but won't go out of my way to get it.

Thanks again for the help.

"Them a wolf" is a great album, I never said it wasnt.

My original post was meant to read that I have every Sugar Minott album upto 1987 including "Them A Wolf".

I would recommend it as a very good late 80`s early digtal album.

"Them A Wolf" surely is a great late 80's album. If you like this then also try "Handcart Man" of Frankie Paul and "Victim" of Gregory Isaacs.

These three lp's are similiar style and sound. I bought them all three together back in the old days (when lp's were cheap!)
