Trojan 2 CD collections

There was a time where most people on this forum despised Trojan. I'm wondering what the opinions of RA members are about Trojan's 2 CD sets. The ones that generally include about 50 songs from an artist.
I personally own most of these. My 2 favorites are Ape-ology and Prince Fari's "Heavy Manners". I had owned one Trojan Lp of Fari's and all of the Scratch discs on CD but the Trojan collections were worth the investment. Anyone else like or dislike these?

Also, does anyone know if more are planned?

before i started buying vinyl i bought these.
really great you know when you are getting into the music. i seems that pressure sounds is the only company re releasing anything...with the exception of a selected few.

Sad to hear that. These were a nice way to find the"missing pieces" of artists catalogs for me. I would usually have some but not all of the tracks on each of the Trojan collections and they always seemed to do a good job of including a lot of material from a certain point in an an artist's career. I hope they continue. The Viceroys would be a great 2 disc set to release.

I seriously doubt that Trojan will come back into action like they were up to the sell-off to the Universal Music Group in 2007.

Since then, releases are down to some Tighten Up and John Holt repackaging.

Trojan has been dead like this more than once before, but the current owners show no signs of action.

Hi there,

Personally, I like only some like Lee Perry sets, Prince Far I or Flashing Echo. Others, like Alcapone or Max Romeo were really boring imo.

I think they are better when they consist of actual albums (like 4 Prince Far I albums or Perry albums) and do much worse when it's just track flow.

You're right. It does seem like Trojan re-hashes a lot of their tunes over and over again. Would love to see them release some tunes from the vaults that haven't been heard in a while.

To be honest, after the complete flood of Trojan reissues during the Sanctuary era, I don't know how much would be left to reissue. They were putting out 5-8 albums a month for about 7 years, on top of all the reissues from the 80s and 90s. They put out what, 60 of the 3 CD box sets, a similar number of two CD anthology series, plus probably a couple hundred single disc albums. Plus things like the Complete Upsetter Singles sets. Sure they've released the Maytals stuff 100 times over, and the DJ compiled sets were junk but they've also put out tons of hard to find tunes. It's a real shame that they're all out of print now. I think I've got a pretty massive collection of Trojan reissues from the last 20 years and there are still about 30 albums on my want list, which I'm trying to pick up before they become impossible to find (some already are!). I think some of the people who complain about Trojan didn't really look at what they put out over the last few years, or have unrealistic expectations about what they had the ability to license/release.
