Jimmy Riley- Put the People First

Post by Jason Allen »

Hi RA Forum-posters,

I recently bought this LP used on vinyl. When I took out the Lp the label on the disc itself looks completely different than the Shanachie version. It is a Jamaican pressing done by the Orange Record label (that is the name of the company not the color of the label). the RA listing only shows the US Shanachie pressing. Can anyone shed some light on this? Did the record get a seperate widespread release in JA? If so should it be in a Shanachie sleeve? Any help would be great.

Riley produced the LP, and likley gave Shanachie territorial rights for regions other than the Caribbean. Often these deals involved using a local press of the "foreign" cover as opposed to creating a entirely separate one.

The Orange label was run by Olivia Grange-Walker, who was Minister of Culture during the Seaga years. Don't know what she is doing now.

Would be interesting to look at the stamper to see if they used the Shanachie mastered plates, or whether the Orange version was mastered in JA. If so, you may have a "brighter" sounding version than the Shanachie, who released some pretty flatly mastered releases in the early years.

Dave-

Much thanks. That is exactly what i was wondering. Funny thing is there was another copy at the same store. I'm tempted to go back and buy it just to see if there are differences in the pressings. I do know the LP I bought seems much thicker than a US pressing would ever be. Also, along the ring around the label it is marked " D.S.R. 5904 Spiderman Sonic Sounds Jimmy Riley LP".

So you have a copy with JA stampers, which may sound bteer than the U.S. pressing on Shanachie. I would imagine that this is the rarer of the two versions.

D.S.R. tells you that it was mastered at Dynamic in Kingston (by Spiderman).
