Greensleeves - Dating the labels

Post by leggo rocker »

I know there's a goldmine of reggae info in here so please someone clear up my confusion!

Which Greensleeves design comes first?

This one? (with NO red print -- none at all)

Or this one? (with ONLY red print for copyright info)

Or This one with red and green flash added around spindle hole?

Well I've been told Green ONLY on a Yellow background is oldest. Then another person told me RED YELLOW AND GREEN is the oldest!

Aaargh!

So I was hoping one of the many reggae oracles on here would give it to us straight.

I have a load of original (or what I thought were original) Scientist dubs on greensleeves, and these are all Yellow background, green 'greensleeves' (with squirly bits inside the block letters) and then copyright notice in small red letters. As in 4267.jpg above.

But then I have War by ranking Trevor on Gred 1 (45rpm 12") and this is as 4197.jpg, with red and green 'flash' around spindle hole!

Anyone know the real story here?

This label design >
was used for all the early 12" Discos.

One of the other two were for all the early LP's.

i was alwayz told that

the one with copyright in red was the oldest

then the one with the copyright in red

the one with the red and green swoosh is used for the early singles

then again i might be wrong

Great topic...somewhat a mystery...maybe they are just album specific?

In regards to "Recent Greensleeves repress have copyright info in Black"

My copy of the below album has the copyright in 'BLACK' not 'RED' and I don't think it is has ever been repressed.

Correct me if I am mistaken.

The original uk greensleeves label is just yellow with the green scaly logo. The Disco labels all have the red and green swirl on top of the yellow-it creates a letter G out of the remaining yellow in the label-(look at it again). The greensleeves LPs with the same label as the discos (with green and red swirl) are the ones pressed in the USA in conjunction with shanachie records. Not necesarrily a repress but just an overseas press (same year). The more recent greensleeves represses are so beautiful you can barely detect a difference even on the labels. But if you look closely you'll notice some of the fonts on the new labels are different sizes than he original and sometimes shifted in different spots than they are on the originals. Just an observation. ADam
