Albums like Noel Ellis LP

Post by FEB »

Hello everybody.

I would like to hear some recommendations for roots reggae lp's with similar sound as the Noel Ellis LP with the Toronto based Summer records. Slow, dub heavy, hypnotizing-style roots vocals etc. Which Jamaican roots producers/studios/artists had a similar sound? Or outside Jamaica. Please don't recommend me "only some generally good Jamaican roots" because there is naturally so many good roots in Jamaica which I have heard and even am lucky enough to own which is excellent but different in sound.

Thank you for your help, already waiting for your knowledgeable recommendations!

that summer records anthology is very good and the dvd that comes with it is, uh, entertaining if nothing else. shows them recording rocking universally if only in prototype stage.

that reminds me: willi williams and noel ellis: rocking universally on stine jac 12" is far better than the goofy version on the noel ellis LP.

if you like that sort of sound you might like wackies productions. i dont particularly but you might. for me wackies has its moments but others really love them. kind of a cheap black ark sound (which makes it a cheap cheap sound) but effective in places. its what a lot of that summer records anthology sounds like to me.

leggo i liked the horace andy showcase, the wayne jarrett showcase and a couple of the sugar minott releases...bought all those on original 10" issue. everything ive heard since then has been spotty to be nice. the dub records really reek if you ask me, just sound cheap and cheaply done. and most of the singers, beyond the ones with a reputation elsewhere, dont do anything for me. to me its mostly just a cheap last resort sort of studio and label.

others disagree. but i rarely hear anything that holds my interest for long. lovejoys are a good example, i really liked their reggae showcase or whatever it was called for about the first three listening then it just stopped doing anything at all for me except that one chances are song. i bought the second release and thought it stank from first listen. they sing well enough, its just the sound is very derivative of everything youve heard before and the players seem very mundane. and the lo-fi recordings dont help.

just not much there to get me excited.

too...much...music...I have yet to personally discover!

But on a sort of related note - that Summer Sounds video of Jackie Mittoo working on the riddim for Rocking Universally - just for the fun of it I sequenced the JM piano part and am building a track around it. I might even finish it some time!
I hope this is not considered blasphemy in these here RA parts ;)

YES-MAN WACKIES! I should have told that I also like the Wackies sound very much. Horace Andy Dancehall Style (and exclusively) Wayne Jarrett, Milton Henry Junior Delaheyne showcases are great. Also even Sugar Minott's wicked ago feel it is one of my favorites by him even though it's a bit different sound than other wackies. On which Wackies album by Minott is the MASSIVE in the ghetto wackies tune? Please keep listing your favorite Wackies albums also I've heard only the ones mentioned above. And some Love Joys but didn't care for it too much.

The albums mentioned by Kalcidis and Ras Dragon seem very interesting to me but also difficult to find and expensive. Any ideas for where to find some relatively cheap good quality presses of these?

Thank you for your advices!
