Rastas' views on abortion?

Post by Funky Punk »

In general, are Rastas typically pro, or anti-abortion - or is it typically considered a matter to be left to each person's individual conscience?

It's not something I'd ever given too much thought to - until I heard Sylford Walker's 'God Bless the Lady' (chorus - 'Abortion is murder - so please don't push that no further!') last night. I know that Junior Murvin makes a brief mention of the wrongness of abortion in one of the songs on Police and Thieves (can't recall the details now - it's been a while!) but aside from that instance, I don't recall the subject ever being explored in reggae music.

I know that this can be a controversial and emotive subject - and I'm definitely *not* trying to start a pro/anti thread here, but I'd be interested to find out what the general consensus on this issue is. Thanks.

I'm very very doubtful that you'd find even a hint of a pro-abortion stance.

Thanks for the replies.

I suppose that there might be songs with a pro-choice message coming from some of the more recent female reggae singers/deejays. Dunno really, I don't really listen to a whole lot of female-fronted reggae...

Another anti-tune : "Abortion" by Alton Ellis (Man From Studio One LP), 1994.
"It seems that mankind has been reborn again, the worst of enemies is now my best friend... and everything, yeah, is gonna be alright"
