He's even recorded a toilet for Lee 'Scratch' Perry!
If you want to know more about the Reggae scene in London from the 60s through to the present, or an insight into record label runnings from the 70s onwards, then this may make for essential listening.
Steve wrote for Black Echoes in the 1970s, ran his own record stores, compiled records for Island, Trojan, and later his own label Blood and Fire records. He co-wrote the Rough Guide To Reggae, a bible for all Jamaican music fans. Amongst his close friends are people like Bunny Lee, Dennis Alcapone, Glen Brown, Lopez Walker, U-Roy and Trinity.
I had the honour of travelling up country to join Steve and his partner Sue at their house in Forest Gate, London, for an afternoon of chat, record playing, tea and biscuits. The ensuing interview spread over 4 hours of recording and will be presented in a number of parts for you to listen to. This is the final part, part 2. His insight and experience makes for essential listening for all Jamaican music fans. I know I learnt more from him in 5 hours than I have on my own in 5 years!
Background music comes from Blood and Fire releases.
Here is part 2 -
The tracks included for your listening pleasure are:
Prince Jazzbo - 'Blank' - Ting A Ling Version
Owen Gray - On The Beach

Winston Francis - Chain Gang
Righteous Flames - Ride On Version

hey Yardie, thanks,
Of course I planned all the time I was there to get some shots of us both in front of the stupidly sized thing he calls his collection! BUT, we chatted and chatted and I only got two shots off at the very end as I ran to the door ( I had to appear on a radio show that night) and so I never got the shots I wanted... he and I are probably going to be doing a regular show together though so I hope that I might remember to, and have more time to, get a few shots off in the future..
in the meantime here are those to crummy old shots.. click on them for larger of course!
