Information wanted about the Culture tracks on this CD:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1256
I´d like to know what year they recorded this.
Was there an album planned, produced by Jack Ruby? (supposing it is his production...)
Any info much appreciated!

Re: Culture - 3 The Hard Way?
According to the notes on the back of the CD:
All of the Culture tracks (14 to 19) are produced by Jack Ruby.
Other notes:
Tracks 1&3 are produced by Sly & Robbie
Tracks 2,4,5,6,&7 are produced by Junjo Lawes
Tracks 8 to 13 are produced by Debby Dobson
The CD was compiled and edited by Blackbeard.
Copyright 1992, Sonic Sounds. There is no other indication on the CD regarding the recording dates of the tracks.
EDIT: Clearly these recordings were from the mid-to-late 1970s, based on the song selections from all three artists.
There are no other liner notes on the sleeve or on the inlay.
In my opinion this is one of the better Sonic Sounds releases, some of the others, have had pretty bad audio quality, but this one is very good.

Re: Culture - 3 The Hard Way?
Thanks, Chris!
What i find a bit odd is that the tracks by Wailing Souls/Meditations are wellknown and easily found on other records -
but the Culture tracks are only available here. At least that´s what I think...
Does anyone know something about the Culture/Jack Ruby session(s)?

hi black ark rock,
i read the post yesterday, but as i didnt know the album i didnt comment.. i presume 'gather round' is a re-titled 'praise him' from the culture in culture album, as is 'soon come', rastaman a come is from the one stone album and make good use of good things is from the 'good things' album. just a guess, i'd say the other two tunes are re-titled versions of other songs, but as i say i havent heard the album so i dont know. bless.

Re: Culture - 3 The Hard Way?
I just listened to the version of "Rastaman A Come" from both the "One Stone" and the "3 The Hard Way" CDs and they are different productions, same goes for "Make Good Use of Good Things."
I don't own the "Culture in Culture" CD, so I can't compare the "Gather Round/Praise Him" song.
"Must it Be This Way" & "Ethiopia is Calling" don't ring any bells for me, but they may show up elsewhere
I'm wondering if these songs were recorded for Jack Ruby for a potential album that never happened, and Culture re-recorded some of these tracks for later albums, e.g. "Good Things" and "One Stone", which in that case the "3 The Hard Way" album is the only way to get the original productions from the Late 1970s/Early 1980s.
Just a thought.
Chris
EDIT: It's interesting that Jack Ruby isn't credited as a producer on any of the Culture albums from the RA database, but he does show up as the producer on this one compilation album. Like Blackarkrock mentioned, can anyone shed any light on the Jack Ruby/Culture relationship.

Re: Culture - Produced by Jack Ruby?
As Culture didn´t exist between 1981-85, and the sound/mix of these tracks is not very consistent (some could be from around 1980, and some from around 1985), I´d say it´s unlikely they´re (all) produced by Jack Ruby. But this is just speculation, of course...
I have not heard these versions elsewhere, that´s for sure.

Re: Culture - 3 The Hard Way - Jack Ruby productions?
On relistening to this for the first time in a couple of years, I now think the following:
Gather Round (aka Praise Him), Soon Come and Must It Be This Way (aka This Way) are early takes/mixes of the *Culture In Culture* (1986) tracks.
As pointed out by ital kemar and Chris, Rastaman A Come is an earlier recording of the track later on *One Stone* (1996), and Make Good Use is an earlier recording of the title track of *Good Things* (1989).
I haven´t found Ethopia Is Calling anywhere else.
My guess is that all these tracks are from early sessions for *Culture In Culture*, and probably not produced by Jack Ruby...

Re: Culture - 3 The Hard Way - Jack Ruby productions?
The credits on the back of their 'In Culture' album list Joseph Hill, Enos McLeod & Alvin Ranglin as producers.
So maybe these earlier versions of songs were for a Jack Ruby album that never went ahead??
Maybe Joseph couldn't get the tapes back from Ruby so they do over the songs for another producer?
Maybe these tracks were just rehearsals that were taped at the time & now since Joseph & Ruby are both passed the tapes have been 'found' by another & released?
Maybe Jack Ruby is not involved at all?
hmmmmm....
