Different mixes of Disco Devil

Post by Geoffrey »

Until last week the only copy of Lee Perry & Full Experience's "Disco Devil" on my shelves was the version that is the first track on this excellent 1989 discomix comp:

[cover=241,267]

I didn't want to pay the big money for an original Upsetter 12 of the same track, but I was always curious to hear it in its original form, so last week I picked up a cheap copy of the Trojan repress of the 12" (from 5-10 years ago, I believe).

Having just spun them back to back, I was shocked to find that the two versions I have are completely different mixes! The Trojan/"Upsetter" 12 runs longer, generally has way more echo effects, and accentuates completely different parts in the mix when compared with the version on the Upsetter Disco Dub Anachron compilation.

Both versions are amazingly good, though personally I prefer the balance of the version on the comp.

Anyway, my question is: which is the *original* original (if indeed either of these are true to the very first cut as a Disco Bum/Cork!), and are there are any more mixes of this track that I should be looking out for? Put on an ironed shirt and info me out of earth! ;)

It helps to some extent, thanks! I suppose this narrows my question down to, Is the Black Art 12" identical to the Upsetter UK (Trojan) 12", or to the Turn and Fire cut, or is it unique?

I think the Dutch Black Art version is the same as the Turn And Fire one,
and the original Upsetter version is the same as the Trojan/Upsetter reissue.

The Trojan 12" reissue is the same as the original Upsetter 12" and the Dutch Black Art 12" is the same as Turn And Fire. I was also shocked (delighted) to discover that there was more than one mix of this unbelievable tune.

Thanks to blackarock and Mick! I think that just about clears it up. :)

@tron: Any link to a sample of that version? Would be interested to hear it.

The Dutch press doesn't have the Jazzbo toast at the very end.
