reggae & dub: collection for sale
Hello all,
I am selling my collection of reggae music: this includes reggae, dub (lots), dancehall, roots, deejay and a bit of lover's rock. Most of it is from 'the golden age', that is between 1970-1985.
I have checked the rules and it seems ok to post a messsage like this on this forum. However, if I have misunderstood, please inform me and I will remove this posting immediately: this site has been so useful to me, and the last thing I want to do is break any rules.
Respect,
Kipper

I should also have said the collection consists of 4000 songs and I can provide a list of the songs/artists/albums. Pleae note the songs are not in vinyl format.

I doubt whether it is legal to resell mp3 copies of your cd's.

What happened to the original thread btw. It moved down one page and had all the replies deleted?

Yeah well obviously if anyone wants to make me an offer to buy a load of mp3 files of my cd collection then you're more than welcome to...!
Of course I downloaded everything for free in the first place, but I've done the hard work so you don't have to.

I wonder if the British Library sound archive have a collection like that? Pity if these things get lost to time, but I wouldn't have the cheek to sell it, & not very legal (sorry Kipper).

Hi Snow and nahskinup,
I think you both could do well to focus less on the gain/money side of things for me (£46) and more on people who love reggae and dub, but don't have the money or time to go out and buy 500-odd reggae/dub albums/CDs. They could boost their collection by 4000 songs by spending just £46 with me. What I am selling took me three years to put together, and I'm not talking an hour here or there, either; I'm talking hundreds of hours, titling, cataloging and cross-referencing all the songs.
As I said before, not one song in my library was downloaded from the internet. As for legality, I would say that if anyone is concerned about the original songwriters, performers and record companies getting their share of the proceeds, I doubt the people selling their vinyl or CDs on eBay are giving a share to them either!
In summary, I'll repeat what I have said before: my main priority is getting well-recorded, wonderful music to those that want it - cheaply.
Respect, Kipper

Re: reggae & dub: collection for sale
With all due respect but when Kipper said, "I doubt the people selling their vinyl or CDs on eBay are giving a share to them [the artists] either!" That's not the point, those people are selling the original LP/CD, not a copy. Since Kipper uploaded all of these songs from his own collection as he states, he should very well know that every CD and LP has a statement about making copies. It is perfectly legal to make a copy of any CD or LP for your own personal use in an MP3 player, etc., it is however illegal to make a copy for someone else. I know most people will burn CDs, etc. to pass along to friends and most of us don't have a major problem with spreading the music, but profiting from it is another thing entirely.

Re: reggae & dub: collection for sale
Besides the fact that this is entirely illegal, it hurts the reggae industry which is struggling to stay afloat. I was just in NYC and visited Jammyland (the best reggae shop in New York) and the MP3 thing is killing them. They are struggling to stay open these days. Don't contribute to this trend. I want to see places like Jammyland stay open forever, and selling cheap CDR's doesn't help. Do the right thing. If you say you're not in it for the 46 pounds, then just don't do it at all.
Also, dumping 4000 songs on someone doesn't help them either. I have an appreciation for this music because I research albums before I buy, decide what I can afford, and then listen to each one as I can get it. If I just had someone else's collection passed on to me, it wouldn't mean as much. Just don't do it bredda. Respect.

Re: reggae & dub: collection for sale
With respect, Tingjunkie, reggae has given me so much that I would never do anything to hurt it - what I am doing is not hurting the reggae industry at all: most of what I have has been deleted, and is simply no longer available - unless you want to wait years in the vain hope that some of what you are after comes up for sale at extortinate prices on eBay.
What I am doing is getting the music to people who would not otherwise have access to it.
I'm gald you are happy to appreciate the music because you research albums before you buy, decide what you can afford, etc etc - just don't make the mistake that everyone else feels the same.
Reggae and dub for ever,
Kipper
