077 Sweet Studio One
I know I know, not very original, but there's a good reason for another Studio One show!

When I first started listening to Jamaican music in any kind of serious manner, I didn't really 'get' Studio One and Sir Coxone Dodd's productions.
I don't know why, I just thought they sounded a bit cheap, a little woolly and not overly impressive. My enjoyment of Studio One seems to have co-incided with my growing knowledge and understanding of Jamaican music, and there's a good reason for that.
Studio One IS Jamaican music. Simple as that. You don't get more 'Roots' than Studio One, where it all begun....

>6. Emile Straker? - Please Be True

Emile Straker was the lead singer of a very popular Bajan calypso band, The Merrymen. While he did have some U.K. releases on the Trojan "Duke" subsiduary, I would be very surpised if he ever recorded at Studio One. His material was distributed in JA by WIRL.

What makes you guess it's him?

davek, Emile Straker recorded some incredibly rare Rocksteady sides for Coxsone. Mis-labbelled as the Martinis, the A side to this is 'I second that emotion' and this tune...Here's one from Popsike that sold for over $300, mine is blank too, it was also sold in the UK on blue Coxsone under CS 7056 Roy Tomlinson - I Stand For I // The Martini's - I Second That Emotion
Producer: Coxson Dodd
1968

I was given this 7, which is a miracle in itself!

Also discussed by myself and others who have UK pressing etc on PAMA forum.
If you've got anything to add, please let me know, it's still not clear enough what's gone on with this release...

Very cool info about the S1 connection.

In August of 1969, I was on a European tour with a group of people, two of them being Emile Straker and his beautiful blonde wife. I wish I had known enough to ask him about recording in Jamaica, but I wasn't familiar with Studio One runnings at the time.

Yep it would have been realy good to clear this up once and for all, because though there is confirmation from more than one source that this is Straker as the Martinis and mis-labbeled again for the Coxsone UK release, there is no cast iron guarentee that this is so, it's quite possible that the mis-information has come from the same source and has diseminated over time to become the most likely scenario, based on what info is out there, there's only one way to get back to the truth and that would be from a source, Straker or Dodd or an arranger like Sibbles or Mittoo, whatever the truth, it's a cracking bit of Rocksteady.

You can hear the A side on one of my other shows http://bigmikeydread.podomatic.com/encl ... -07_00.mp3 it's track 27 on this one....
