most likely Bagga Walker: bass, Jackie Mittoo & Pablove Black: keyboards, Freddi McGregor: drums, Ernest Ranglin: guitar, Horsemouth: percussion.
Anyway just look at the credits of albums made in that era.

Re: Who Were the Brentford Disco Set?
after listening to the extended mix, it is without question an early 80's overdub and NOT Ernest Ranglin or Eric Frater. so, the mystery continues.
i can tell you that it's likely Cleveland "Clevie" Browne on the drums... but that's about all i know, probably Pablove Black was still there, his "Mr. Music" LP came out in 1979 on Studio One. none of the other session musicians are listed, but there is a picture of the bass player on the back of the jacket. the cover shows Pablove playing all the instruments that would have been right at home in that era; an RMI electric piano, Hohner Clavinet, Hammond B-3 and what looks like some kind of Solina-type string synth.
most of the Brentford Rd. All Stars/Disco Set/ Rockers retread stuff was drum overdubs and some minimal stuff like tambourine but there were some full band productions done like "I Want Your Love".

Re: Who Were the Brentford Disco Set?
The overdub musicians were certainly the sames as the band sessions ones.
One thing (where did I read that ?) is that Mr Dodd sent for the musicians to do the overdubs *individually*, bass player, drummer, and so on, so they can't really know for sure who were the other musicians doing overdubs on the same track !

i doubt that the guys from the 1969 "Heavenless" session would be the same crew as 1979/1980 or so - there was a lot of turnover, hence, that's why you have Soul Vendors, Sound Dimension, Soul Defenders, The New Establishment, and then all of the Brentford Rd. variations.Nicholas wrote:The overdub musicians were certainly the sames as the band sessions ones.

Re: Who Were the Brentford Disco Set?
I remember reading that Horsemouth had been in the New York studio overdubbing just bass drum on some tracks which must have been around 1980. Just adding an extra drum beat per bar I suppose would turn it into "disco" if that means the 1st and 3rd beat pattern. Not much of a job for a musician though!

Great thread. I'm a Studio One junkie - can't get enough of that stuff! Whomever (or is that whoever?) was jamming on the over-dubs - they did a great job. I even like the synth drums although I hate what they did to some of the older sets like The Best of The Clarendonians. "Ten Guitars" overdub sucks - to put it bluntly.

Re: Who Were the Brentford Disco Set?
One can hear it on several tracks, but what comes to my mind is the disco 45 version of "Can I Change My Mind", with that additional beat. Almost unnoticeable, until at a certain point the whole rhythm drops out and lets only the bass drum playing for a few seconds...Return of Jesco wrote:Just adding an extra drum beat per bar I suppose would turn it into "disco" if that means the 1st and 3rd beat pattern.
