Coming from a 100 percent punk rock background and still loving the genre so much I can tell you that the production of reggae until about 1985 or so was done in a very punk way. The recordings were raw and DIY just like true punk is still done today. King Tubby built and modified his own equipment which is very punk, imo. If you like punk it is a good balance to reggae. You can ping pong between them and they just compliment each other so well. That and I am sure that the early punkers enjoyed the anti-establishment lyrical content but I just enjoy that super riggity-raw sound!Gabranth wrote:Why do punks love reggae? I still don't get it. These two genres can't be more different, musically imho. No disrespect intended here, I got many punk friends over the years, but their music is so impossible to hear for me - so why is reggae so liked in the punk scene?

I think this would translate well:

Edit - of course there isn't much talk of jah jah in punk music but you could replace jah with "we", or "punk", or "punk rock"...
Inity!
An obvious choice lyrics-wise would be John Holt - Police in helicopter... not sure how you could convert the tune though

just for the fukc of it, you guys should pick the sweetest, balladiest reggae tune and give it a sped up treatment. Like Night Nurse or Secretary by Gregory Isaacs, something of that nature...

Night Nurse - announce it onstage as being a song about your addiction to cough syrup.gbougard wrote:just for the fukc of it, you guys should pick the sweetest, balladiest reggae tune and give it a sped up treatment. Like Night Nurse or Secretary by Gregory Isaacs, something of that nature...

Try this, Dennis Brown - Get Myself Together, might suit the punk genre.
