regarding your theoretical question, the US is so utterly different than Jamaica, i can't see any way that reggae ever could have started here. as it is now, even Americans of African descent are culturally quite different from Jamaicans of African descent. two different worlds
Exactly that. Two differant worlds but the same people.
A Chinaman is Chinese wherever he goes and this has manifested itself in Jamaica with producers, musicians and sound system owners of Chinese decent but they will sound and act Jamaican but still Chinese.
Another theoretical Question:
Can a Jamaican be an African so far away from Africa?
Ask a Rastaman
who should hail as the king of reggae now?

When a man like Freddie McGregor tells you that 90 percent of the grassroots musicians in Jamaica in the early days of reggae/rocksteady and even ska, were rasta people, then you should know thats no garbage he's talking.

I guess you are right then and we all should know that Rastafarians and the Rastafarian Church invented Ska Rocksteady Roots Reggae and Dancehall. It was the major force behind the creation otherwise it wouldnt exisist so let the Jamaicans and world be gratefull for that.jahsteppa wrote:When a man like Freddie McGregor tells you that 90 percent of the grassroots musicians in Jamaica in the early days of reggae/rocksteady and even ska, were rasta people, then you should know thats no garbage he's talking.
So thanks for it. I am listinging to it every day. And because I love Reggae, I also love the Rastafarian believe and customs and especially should love you and all Rasta's no matter what they say (or do). Sry I doubted your words and debated it. I finally see what you are saying is the truth like it always was, has been and probably will be.
Futher, good luck in your life and spiritual journey. That I Mean sincerely.

There would not have been any Jamaican music if it wasnt for white men (The Caribs, Greame Goodall, Chris Blackwell ext. ), Chinese (Byron Lee, Tom the Great Sebastian, Leslie Kong etc.)and Syrians (Ken Khouri, Edward Seaga etc)

Also race is irrelevant. Doenst anybody pay attention? It were the Jamaicans and the Island's 50,60 70ties curtural politcal, society, economical environment that created reggae regardless of the influence of race, religion etc. It was all part of the bigger mix but none played a dominate role. Like some off Dem try to make us believe. Besides maybe the economical situation, read poverity. That was a big driver behind it all.jumbo wrote:There would not have been any Jamaican music if it wasnt for white men (The Caribs, Greame Goodall, Chris Blackwell ext. ), Chinese (Byron Lee, Tom the Great Sebastian, Leslie Kong etc.)and Syrians (Ken Khouri, Edward Seaga etc)

firstly it was about selling more beer, that's why some Jamaican entrepreneurs (Tom Wong, Vincent Edwards, Arthur Reid, Clement Dodd etc.)started playing music fto attact more customers, which evolved into the soundsystem culture out of which the Jamaica recording industry and music sprung.

Sry Jahsteppa that is the only I see to get out of this discussion with you otherwise we will be doing this untill we are 80-tie. Let say my neighbour (who listen to arabic music) and you feel that rasta created reggae. It is fine by me. I and other people think differently see tons of arguments in this thread before. We wont change our minds. So can we close this discussion Please.jahsteppa wrote:siegi theres no need for sarcasm or ignorance. Lets be real about this....
