Re: What do you think about ebay crazy prices?
I buy a lot off ebay as I am a collector.
But everything I buy gets played. I even open sealed records to clean and then play them. I don't care if it makes the value drop, the record was pressed to be spun on the decks, not kept in a basement.
But I also buy repress, and sometimes CDs - usually to get extra versions. CDs for the car (and bike!) vinyl is for at home and my radio station.
I get a bit upset when people say 'collectors just buy for the collecting, not the sound'. Maybe so with some collectors but ALL the collectors I know love the music. It isn't a cold, calculating money thing. The collecting is driven by love of the music.
I agree with Lion's earlier post, we should support the good, honest labels making good, honest represses and re-releaases. They deserve our support.
I would also support new artists too, but I just don't find any of them that really get me interested in the same way as original vintage work.

Definitely agree with you leggo. We - as collectors - need to support good & honest labels with good repress, etc...
Can anyone come with a recommended lables list?
Just to add few lines: I am a collector who obviously love the music and I buy mainly vynils (some session recordings or special CDs sometimes) but it's really rare I spent hard money for originals or rares copies. I focus on new releases and (shall I say good) repress. Maybe it is because I don't have access to physical stocks & I am not keen on chasing up rare/original records through internet shops.
But imho, I've got a crucial selection though...hehe

Re: What do you think about ebay crazy prices?
The problem with restricting your buying to repress/rerelease is that you simply can't get 99% of the original stuff like this.
Original vinyl isn't always expensive, in fact some of my BEST records have cost me LESS than new stuff.
I've been especially pleased with some 12inch 45s I've discovered for just a few pounds - or even just a few pence!
Sure, there are some vinyl out there that demand top dollar - rare old records. But some of the higher prices go for stuff that isn't (IMHO) even all that good for litening.
As for not buying via Internet, you'll soon have to modify that as record shops are all closing down all over the world due to the onslaught of the Net.

The one thing I never see mentioned is used record stores. Maybe it's a local thing (there are several in my area). If you shop around and are patient, there are some great albums waiting to be found.
Of course, there's garbage too, but the stores I like will let you spin a disk to check the condition.

I don't think I'll ever find any reggae gems in my Lincoln local stores! Although there is one record shop that sells reggae represses and rereleases. But sadly, it is about to close its doors.
