Got the red and white copy. Bought in in my teenage days from a student for 5 german marks = 2.50 Euro.
Any ideas, what´s it worth today?

Have 2 copies : the Celluloid one with red gold and green stripes
[cover=2125,2483]

and a Studio 16 press from the 80s, same cover as the Fay og (without gold and with the picture taking the whole cover), cat STLP 001 / matrix LTM 1035 with the red and white label

I know it's from the 80s because I got it from a man who bought it in the 80s in a french shop in Versailles.

The Celluloid press has reversed labels but has a better sound (not a big difference but there is a very light shhhh on the S16 press and not on the Celluloid)

If you thinking of getting it avoid the Jet Star CD reissue as the sound quality is crap and was clearly recorded straight from a scratch up poor vinyl copy.

Grass Roots Of Dub is certainly a great early dub LP, but its presentation as an album mixed by Perry and Tubby on alternate sides is, I believe, a cause of some misconception. I would say that the rhythms were originated both at the Black Ark and, possibly, at Joe Gibbs, while the mixing on both sides is entirely Tubbys. The UK based producer Winston Edwards had links with all of them, I think he may have even been related to Gibbs. Also, the mixing desks depicted on the cover were certainly not the ones used by either party at the time. Edwards was merely trying to get a hype going for the album by dressing it as a clash.

Interesting post, Sir Bellyas. That's sort of the notion I had about this album, which is why I was surprised to see it presented as a great album without any sort of caveat attached...

The one reissued in 2005 had the black & white cover with a reddy pink and white label.No matrix in the wax just `at the grass roots of dub`.
on the Studio 16 Label.
The number on the label is STU16 LP001.

Sir Bellyas is right the mixes are either 6 Tubby + 4 Perry or 5 Tubby and 5 Perry. Never investigate this point.

Regarding the mixing desk I can say that the one attributed to Tubby is close to the one presented, but it's not the same one. perhaps the same brand? You can see a pic of the actual Tubby's one here:

I saw once the actual Tubby's console and it's this one. There is also a film with Jammy mixing a dub to Jr Reid's "Jailhouse" @ tubby's with the exact same console:

It definitly looks like the Soundcraft model presented on back cover. I'm certain Perry had a console from this brand at one point not sure it's the same model tho'


BTW, the pics appeared on the very first pressing, the one with a kind of Fay pre label + a sticker on bck cover with corrected titles. Got it and to answer the first question:

Was later reissued on various Studio 16 label design and even later on Celluloid record (LTM mat# / circa 89). I know the Celluloid owner's son, I will ask him to confirm date.

Original pressings of this is on Total Sounds (JA) and on Fay Music inc. (UK).

The original Fay Music pressing has a white label with only the title on it in black printing (with King Tubby misspelled as King Tubb and some other typos that I can't remember right now...). The cover of the original pressing has a sticker with the tracklisting on the back.

Other Fay pressings and the Studio 16 pressings are reissues.

All tracks where mixed by Tubby and most of the tracks (8 of 10?) where recorded at Black Ark by Lee Perry.
