Re: hearing bass lines
Don`t take this as read , Jonti , but I would keep them in this position ( 6 ft. minimum distance between speakers AND towed in ) and turn the volume UP to fill the room with sound

I see what you're getting at, yeah, thanks. I'll try that. At the moment they're about 6 ft. apart, but not towed in. This is partly because of the unfortunate design of my living/listening space - it's L-shaped!

Big-ups to AnorakTrev! If anyone looking for help with similar problem finds this thread, then know that speaker placement and angle can make a big difference. In particular, don't have them to close to a corner or back wall.
It's a tricky business though - as was mentioned it takes patience and small incremental moves. Also note that some configurations may result in a fidelity decrease.
For me adjustments were required when switching amps. Perhaps because the old was 40W per channel and the new 55.

Re: hearing bass lines
Would the benefits of a wall mount be as dramatic in a carpeted room? If not, is it still worth doing?
Thanks again

Is your floor solid or planks on joists , vtov ? If you can hear " footfall " through your speakers with a turntable mounted on a suspended floor , yes , try putting it on a wallmount .
The benefits of a carpeted room is to reduce sound reflections , as mentioned earlier . Some people have a " dead " room , acoustically speaking , so in that case you might want more liveliness in your listening enviroment . It`s up to you and your ears !!!

Re: hearing bass lines
Um it's a second floor room with carpet over hardwood. (If there's any hint that bare floor would improve listening then we'll have it out but that hasn't been suggested here.)
Can't hear footfall and don't think the stylus is picking up any vibrations from the speaker or floor. Turntable is at the top of a potentially rickety unit weighed down by a hundred albums and the other stereo components.
So I suspect a wall mount might help but probably not drastically. Just got excited by Leggo's comment elsewhere that the wall mount 'really tightened up the bass', but mustn't forget it applied to a room with no carpet.
Will enjoy the sounds while pondering a next step - maybe nothing is needed straight away. Must lay off tinkering with the speaker positions too - a pain a mi back

Re: hearing bass lines
this...just from my lo fi experience (sure most of the previous posts are on the ball) but - I got a pair of cheeeeeeap! Yamaha http://www.zzounds.com/item--YAMRH2C
headphones for walking around ($20) - to replace the earpod rubbish and when I got them I was astounded at their low down muddiness. Found out soon after that I had set my iPod with treble reduction. When I turned that off, I was hearing EVERYTHING with these cheap things with perhaps an unnatural bass accent. Not a problem for the bass fiend.
Only draw back is the warm (hot) weather coming up. These phones kept my ears and head warm in winter...
The music keeps my heart warm year round!

yes I will strap a f**king boom box to my head with duct tape on your instructions Stepping Razor.
Thanks for the correction(s)
Now get off that computer - you'll destroy your eyes and you might be tempted to make music on it. You do know that computers are BAD things - don't you?
That left/right hand typing will ruin your eyes...
A good clip around the ear is what you need. And shilling in your pocket just for good measure.
